a view from the cheap seats?
« on May 17, 2011, 03:37:07 pm by sha66y »
i have just about caught up on what people on here think of \"how the season went\" and who we should be looking at, i even reaf Filo`s player by player account.....

now i do not like to read the words \"great,excellent,brilliant, and such like , when talking about our players,!

all in all some of them had a reasonable season with a few \"GOOD\" performances, and more than i would like to mention had \"MEDIOCRE\" seasons with an occasional good game.....

see.... absolutely no Rose tints at all......

however to end on a controversial point..........

i would certainly release the following players:

Sheils - not good enough
JOC - flatters to deceive, crap tackler unless 60/40 in his favour,
Chambers - past it and not vgood enough
Wilson - ditto
Hird - ditto
Lockwood - ditto
Hayter - not good enough, but occasionally contributes?????
M.Woods - not as good as some would beleive
Woods (keeper my arce?)

we could replace all these from the best teams in the division below, with young eager players, wanting to ply their trade at a higher level....... not all the players below us are crap!!!!

cheers

Ignoring your persistent crap about JOC (whom whilst I admit has had a poor calendar year has certainly been good enough for this level) I don't think you realise that the days of creaming players from L1 for up to a maximum of £200k are gone. Even from the poorer clubs.

JOC - £130k, G Roberts - free, Wellens - free, Hayter - £200k, Heffs - £125k, Woods - free.

Who are their contemporary equivalents? I can think of Taylor from Oldham who might be the cheapest of the cream from L1.

I agree there needs to be a shake up but you can't go releasing important players from the spine of the team and I'd certainly include JOC, Hayter and M.Woods in that. They will all show up as inconsistent over 46 games as they aren't premiership players...

The man has his opinion. Merely calling him a \"Pillock\" isn't much of an intelligent argument is it? There are quite a few players in the squad who are not honestly good enough for the Championship, who they are exactly remains a personal choice, but we are all entitled to our personal list of failures this season. Having said that, players who have stood out for me in a good way are Sharp, Friend (at cb, sometimes), Coppinger, Stock, Hayter (For his sheer effort). Other than that, it's been a squad of not-really-up-to-the-job players this season (excluding loans, which I'm assuming aren't coming back to Rovers).
Rovers could be in big trouble next season unless some better players turn up during the summer with a good frame of mind and a willingness to put some effort in.

I think a lot of managers would \"release him\". He's good by Doncaster Rovers standards, which is an entirely different thing to good by Championship standards. Mind you, I was reading the Yorkshire post yesterday and 5 sports journo's picked from all the regions teams a \"Team of the season\". A couple of them picked O'Connor.....along with Stock, and Dumbaya.................! Like I said, we all have opinions...and most of us are wrong.

Please benaldo, enlighten us as to why you think JOC isn't up to Championship standards?

I think Benaldo's cover as a rovers supporter could be slipping.... a few more ridiculous sentences and I will be convinced he's a WUM.

On the basis that we will be commencing our 4th year in the championship in a few months I'm puzzled as to why a good player for us is not a good player for other championship sides.

Must have dreamed all those points we gained in the last 3 seasons!

Ah!!! just remembered - it's cos we're a pub team!

Seem to recall it is only a couple of months ago that a large number of Derby fans were willing to drive up to Doncaster to take him back with them.

Yes, JOC didnt have a great season but who did?

Also harsh on Hayter. Hayter is a work horse, wont score the goals consistently....but if you look we score more goals when Billy and Hayts play togeather. If we miss one of them, we dont do as well.

I agree; Jimmy is quality but played unfit recently. I don't think we can afford to lose a player who can play RB & centre half equally as well.

I have to agree that JO'C is a top class player at this level too but was very disappointed that given his presence on the pitch this season............he neither set nor led by example in terms of the calming influence he should have had on younger players struggling around him.
I'm sure he will be back stronger than ever..........we need a bloody leader of substance on that pitch and that has cost us very dearly last season.
A mistake (amongst others) that we can't allow to happen next season in what promises to be an even harder league still to survive.

Couldn't agree more. Stock has some great qualities but a Billy Bremner he isn't.

JOC possibly. Sulli would be good if playing and not in the nets. Friend maybe for the future?

A lot of players looked mediocre and not upto speed towards the end. But lest we forget, alot of them were playing nowhere near 100% match fit. Add to that the pressure of relegation, its human nature that mistakes (often simple ones) happen.

I'm looking forward to seeing new faces in the door however, I personally think a new season will bring a fresh start to a large majority of players who have played with us throughout our Championship campaign (As long as we can get to the bottom of the injury reasons, plus a shake-up in training/fitness). Hopefully some of the players in question will look like they were prior to our 2011 year.

... To be 9th upto the end of the year must mean we were doing summat right surely?!?
