I've had a dream
« on July 30, 2011, 07:22:51 am by Bentley Bullet »
Dead vivid it was. The hotel Reception was covered with pictures of famous Brighton people from over the years. Max Miller, Richard Attenborough, Steve Coogan, Norman Cook, Zoe Ball, Laurence Olivier, Joan Plowright, Winston Churchill, Peter Andre to name but a few.
“Have these celebrities all stayed here”, I asked the receptionist. “Oh yes, some quite recent”, she replied. “Growbag used to come here regularly a couple of years ago”, she continued.
“Who’s Growbag?” I asked.
“Katie Price”, she replied.
“Why do you call her growbag?” I said
“Because she always had Pete inside her”, she answered.

On another wall I noticed pictures of famous present day footballers, the likes of Drogba, Messi, Sharp, Torres, Rooney, and Tevez. Next to those were pictures of former legendary players, including Bobby Charlton, Denis Law,  Alick Jeffrey,  Geoff Hurst and Jimmy Greaves. I remember thinking, why no picture of Georgie Best?  Many of those featured weren’t fit to lace his drinks. Reflecting on that I bet he was well disappointed when the Winehouse that arrived in heaven wasn’t quite what he’d hoped for.

A few drinks later in the bar we were discussing Rovers past fortunes in Brighton. Apparently we've only won there once, and retribution couldn't come soon enough. It was a rare opportunity for us to visit the seaside and shite on the Seagulls for a change instead of the other way round.

The subject soon changed when half a dozen scantily clad girls walked into the bar. As I gazed at them the barman said, “Don’t look at what you can’t afford!”
I said “What do you mean?”
He said “they’re whores from the Timber yard club”
I said “Strange name for a whorehouse”
“Not really”, he said.....” You pay them - they give you wood”
Isn't it always the case that nothing ever develops from such situations when they occur in dreams?

Nothing did for me anyway because next thing I was in the stadium, standing proud watching the players come onto the pitch, and hoping my team don’t let the occasion get to them.

Not long after kick-off it looked like we might get our wish. A neat bit of play between Sharp and Coppinger let BROWN through to give the lanky striker a debut goal (13 mins).
Rovers were inspired following the goal and their superiority was rewarded when Billy SHARP scored from the spot following a foul in the box on Ryan Mason (41 mins)

H.T.  Brighton 0  Rovers 2

Brighton kicked off the second half with their hackles up, clearly not wanting to lose their first ever game at the fabulous Amex stadium. Two minutes later they pulled a goal back when debutant Craig MACKAIL-SMITH scored a spectacular solo goal.

It was an onslaught following the goal and Rovers had to defend for the next twenty minutes with all players back.  Rovers then started to get their shape back and had a decent ten minute spell themselves, pinning Brighton back, and forcing Seagulls captain Gordon Greer into making a dramatic goal-line clearance.

The game continued end to end and the remainder of the game was a real nail biter. Then on 87 minutes Brighton got a corner, the ball floated across in what looked like slow motion, rising above the Rovers defenders, leaving GREER unmarked to nod the ball past Woods, and into the net.

Brighton 2  Rovers 2
