Me, I was just coming towards the end of an afters shift, if I remeber correct it was about 8 or 9 o clock in the evening about 3 or 4 weeks after lockerbie

Amazingly I was watching 'Air Crash Investigation' this morning and it was that flight they were doing

.. and there were 2 crashes (abroad) featuring Dan Air as follows both with huge losses of life


1970 Dan-Air de Havilland Comet crash: a de Havilland Comet 4 operating a charter flight from Manchester to Barcelona crashed into a mountain near Arbucias in Catalonia in northern Spain on 3 July 1970. The aircraft was destroyed and 105 passengers and seven crew died. This was the airline's first accident resulting in fatalities among fare-paying passengers.


Dan-Air Flight 1008: a Boeing 727–46 (registration G-BDAN) crashed on 25 April 1980 while preparing to land at Los Rodeos (now Tenerife North Airport), Canary Islands, at the end of a charter flight from Manchester. The aircraft flew into high terrain when it turned the wrong way in a holding pattern. The aircraft was destroyed and all 146 on board were killed. This accident was the deadliest air disaster involving a British-registered aircraft in terms of loss of life.

I was at Loughborough University at the time. Had been driving down the M1 back to my digs that evening after Xmas back in Donny. I'd been at that part of the M1 about an hour before the crash. It was a miracle that no one was killed on the ground - when I was driving it was nose to tail but apparently there was a break in the traffic of 400 yards when the plane came down.

Went out for a beer that night unaware of what had happened. When we came out if the pub, there was a constant stream of helicopters flying overhead, presumably taking the injured away. We thought war had broken out.

If you read the piece it would seem that break in the traffic was down to a couple of very vigilant drivers who saw the plane coming down.

Not to trivialise this at all but the news seems a little less dramatic these days since the advent of Sky News etc. In a perverse way I kind of miss the newsflash...you knew summat really was UP when one of them came on.

Ahh. Cheers Mark. Didn't get chance to read the whole story at work. That said, if the M1 had been as busy as it was when I was on it, no amount of vigilant drivers could have prevented carnage.

At the risk of sounding like an old man, I agree with you about the news issue. I was totally unaware of the Kegworth crash, until hearing the radio news at 7:30 the next morning, even though it happened 5-6 miles away from my digs. These days I'd hear about it within minutes. It's fascinating how we have developed a need to know information instantly these days.

I had passed the site where the crash would happen some 20 minutes before it occured. Not sure why id been to Donny that weekend, must have been a Rovers or Dons game on!!!

Rovers didnt play that weekend Longbridge, must have been the Dons. If I remember I'll check when I get home from work ;-)
