Johan Cruyff smoked 60 a day, and was possibly the best player in the World at the time

That time was nearly 40 years ago and times have moved on a lot. He is a fool if he is smoking. Not least because he is bound to injure himself lighting up.

I can't see any excuse for Rovers players to smoke. As if they aren't enough reasons as it is for any normal person, their wages are paid for them to keep fit and healthy. Smoking shouldn't be part of that.

Reminds me of a time last year when John Oster tweeted one friday night that he was about to have a chinese takeaway. Shows how little some of them care about their job.

Yep, they're entitled to a social life like all of us. But being a football player at a high level (League 1 is still a quality league when you compare it to most leagues in Europe) should mean a bit more than turning up for the matches.

Why does smoking affect how he plays?

Because he'll get out of breath easier because he's destroying his lungs.

Surely any sportsperson can do just what they like - whether it's cigarrettes or chinese takeaways - just as their employer and/or sponsor can also do exactly as they like when it comes to contract renewal time? It's nowt to do with any of us. Passing judgements like those in this thread is simple minded.

Members of our previous league 2 championship team, Tim Ryan, Mark Albrighton,  Jermaine McSporran etc were seen regularly in town having the odd fag on a night out.  Marlboro Lights they used to smoke.

As a non-smoker then I think I am qualified to say that there is a lot of misinformation also being aired in this thread as relates to smoking affecting sporting ability. Yes there is a good possibility that smoking now will have a long term affect on his lungs - but will it affect his current ability? Ask Bradley Wiggins? Or Eddie Merckx? The world's two most famous Belgians.

Brazilian legend Socrates was a chain smoker - Dead now like!

I used to live opposite Matt Elliott -former Leicester defender. He was constantly stood outside his house with a drink and a cig on the go.

His lungs are obviously ok as he is a pro sportsman. He can do what he wants as long as he plays well on a Saturday.

He was born in Belgium I believe, doesn't change the fact his mother is english and he grew up in Lancashire as you say.

Many footballers smoke, I have certainly seen many Rovers players smoking in town before. Hayter, Oster, more from that clan...

Sorry, little in joke there between LJ Monk and myself for the 3 people who we bored with the cycling threads over the summer.
From that ever reliable source wikipedia (as I cant be bothered to type out what's in his book)
Wiggins was born in 1980 in Ghent, Belgium, where his Australian father, Gary Wiggins, an endurance cyclist, was based. When his parents separated in 1982, he moved to London with his English mother to stay with his maternal grandparents at the Dibdin House estate in Maida Vale.[4]
Wiggins' mother, Linda, was a school secretary at St Augustine's Church of England High School, a Voluntary Aided Church of England state comprehensive school in Kilburn in North London, which Bradley attended. He has a younger brother, Ryan.[4] He started racing at south London's Herne Hill Velodrome at age 12 and represented Camden in the London Youth Games as a teenager.

He moved up to Manchester, as all the young GB riders have to do, when he joined the improvement squad so as to train at the velodrome and has stayed there after moving to the road, maybe the ciggies are cheaper?

Probably just a social smoke, nothing wrong with that. It's like having the odd beer, chocolate cake or the odd ounce of horse tranquilizers.
