Well Done Goldthorpe

Well I for one am truly embarrassed to be from the same locale as the knuckle dragging slope heads that manifested themselves as representatives of the old Pit communities I knew and loved as a kid and young man.
Thankfully my new neighbour Des who is 84 and a veteran of the Second World War summed it up nicely for me.
"Mrs Thatcher said we were pulling down the country and a disgrace, that is truly hurtful to a man like me who went down Pit in Second World War at 14 years old and broke my Back to get Coal for the war effort."
He is typical of the grand old gents who used to give me a bob out of their pay packets when my dad took me up to Brodie for his wages and treated me to a glass of milk and Kit kat in pit Canteen."Dad I want to go down Pit like you" my father replied"promise me one thing son ,that you will never follow me down that stinking hole" he got killed in1970 in a Pit accident and his sons never went down there.

I had to make the same promises to my father, he died in 1967 he fought in Africa and Italy he did not want the same uncertainty for me that he had been through i had to have a trade apprenticeship so i did carpentry and joinery. It must be very difficult for people like your neighbour to comprehend

My grandad served in North Africa and Italy too, Ch-Ch.

My mum found out some years ago, before the old boy shuffled off this mortal coil aged 98, that she had a half-brother in Italy called Gianni.

My Dad wanted to work down the pit like my Grandad.
So my Grandad smuggled him down for the day and locked him in a shaft on his own with a canteen for 12 hours.
My Dad got a job with the Water Board.

On a similar vein, my Dad told me if I wanted to join the army, he would break my leg whilst I was asleep so I couldn't join up.

Now what can i say to my lad if says he want to be a Leeds fan?
