And again people make me laugh

This country would not be better served by paying more in tax etc. it would be better served by whichever party is in power using the money they have a little more wisely. That is in my opinion.

Davis was a joke! Anyone who thinks the town has at all improved under his govere need their head checking All he had managed to do since them government watchdog people left is cut public sevices in order to needlessly cut council tax. If he wanted to cut costs why didn't he look into restructuring to improve efficiency?
Any improvements that were made while he was in office were planned or atleast in the pipeline before he came into office.
All he ever did was cut down some trees and read the racing post. Doncaster will be a much better place with him as far away any responsibility as possible.

COME ON YOU HOOOOOPS!!! :scarf:

Didn't vote but I would have stayed with Davies he seemed a bit more switched on than most. In particular he picked up on the fact that quite a bit of time could be knocked off the rail journey from London by sorting the pinch points at Grantham Hitching and Rosso.
I should imagine Ross will be hacking up the Council tax to fund the Council parties at their race course box.

Can anyone answer my question please? Not being a dick just generally curious.

Why does a mayor have to be politically aligned?

I don't believe they do Adam. I'm not an expert but I rather think the political alignment is usually needed so that the candidate can have access to all the various support functions that are needed to be a credible candidate. If you stood on your own, who would design, print, distribute your leaflets? Who would pay for that? Who would get all the names and addresses you would need? Who would tell you where to concentrate your efforts? Who would do your opinion research for you? Who would do your press liaison? Who would manage your diary, get best value from your time? Even who would do your driving?

You could do it all on your own - if you had the money. Clint Eastwood famously did it once in Carmel California. But for most folk, it's an impossible job without the support of a 'machine'

Bob, your comments above make the result even more remarkable, one had possibly the next prime minister knocking on doors for her in a labour stronghold , one was a bloke doing it by himself.

For the result to be so close - (an almost dead heat totaling two thirds of those of the 62k that bothered ) doesnt really seem to  demonstrate  there was a massive demand for change  - especially when you consider he got in last last time as an unknown protest vote- so this time people knew what they were getting and almost returned him for another go

This is why I hate politics because you've probably got the best mayor somewhere sitting on his hands because he doesn't have the mega bucks that the majority of candidates do. So it's more of a popularity contest than an actual election of a mayor that will make the town better?

It makes me mad.

Another question stemmed from naivety though, where do the political parties get their funding? I imagine some of it is from our taxes.

I voted Davis. I admired his backbone and commitment to get things done in the face of edversity at times e.g.:

- Re-opening the old North bridge to outbound cars. A victory for common sense in a town with high congestion but slammed by Labour councillors

- Removal of parking meters around Christchurch. Another sensible move to encourage people to the town centre and boost business in the area.

- Removal of obstructive trees at the racecourse. Doncaster Racecourse is one of the world's most prestigious venues for its sport and is there primarily for horse racing (with other functions etc. thrown in). If you can do something to improve the view of horse racing at a horse racing venue, just do it. I couldn't believe the amount of nimbyism at the time.

To be fair, Mike, you've had a spot of "previous" with him.  Didnt he teach you how to read the form guide in the racing post?

My politics teacher at Danum too.

Racing Post tucked under his arm even in those days...

Mind you, that was when the Staff room always looked like it was on fire as there was always a cloud of smoke trying to escape from under the door.
Incredible how things were!

Aye Rob. Would you credit it, eh?

There were two or three teachers who I used ot have a great bit of banter with back in the day. But then again, having thought about it a bit more...

My A-Level English teacher AND my A level Media Studies teacher both jacked in the profession after two years of teaching me. Complete coincidence of course.

The new Mayor has announced her new Cabinet Quelle Surprise they are all Labour! If Peter Davis had a cross party Cabinet why does Ross need a single party one, transparency, fairness and all that!
