I don't believe they do Adam. I'm not an expert but I rather think the political alignment is usually needed so that the candidate can have access to all the various support functions that are needed to be a credible candidate. If you stood on your own, who would design, print, distribute your leaflets? Who would pay for that? Who would get all the names and addresses you would need? Who would tell you where to concentrate your efforts? Who would do your opinion research for you? Who would do your press liaison? Who would manage your diary, get best value from your time? Even who would do your driving? You could do it all on your own - if you had the money. Clint Eastwood famously did it once in Carmel California. But for most folk, it's an impossible job without the support of a 'machine'CheersBobG

So it's more of a popularity contest than an actual election of a mayor that will make the town better? It makes me mad.Another question stemmed from naivety though, where do the political parties get their funding? I imagine some of it is from our taxes.

I find that hard to believe.not even from you???????
The new Mayor has announced her new Cabinet Quelle Surprise they are all Labour! If Peter Davis had a cross party Cabinet why does Ross need a single party one, transparency, fairness and all that!
