Question for those of us Stateside.
« on August 19, 2013, 01:10:22 am by newyankee »

I would like to ask those of us on here who watch in the States, "what did you make of NCB'S coverage of the Premier League?"

I thought the coverage was good, I had expected to get some American commentators but that was not the case. I also liked the fact that you could choose from All the live matches on the Saturday. I thought overall it was better than ESPN and Fox Soccer.

Hi New Yankee, thanks for the report.  I wasn't able to catch any matches this weekend, but wondered how it went on now it's on NBC.  Actually, I like the British commentators better then the American ones (who I feel talk too much) so am glad to hear that.

It wasn't bad. Nothing to brag about, but not cringe-worthy as I feared it might prove to be. Being on NBC is saving me about $50 a month on my cable bill, so no complaints from me! It could be in spanish and I'd still be happy.

I too cannot stand American commentators.
It's their incessant use of other American sports terminology that does my head in.

My biggest thing Orlando is when they refer to a TEAM as an IT.  A team is made up of more than one player and is therefore plural, it is not a singular item.  THEY lost not IT lost. THEY have won the last three matches NOT It has won it's last three matches.  Also end line for goal line  and out of play instead of into touch.  Maybe a bit picky but the American commentators are not the same.

One exception, I would gladly rid the airwaves of Ray "over the top Geordie" Hudson. He may be English but he is a pain in the you  know what!!!!!

I wonder NY, is the "it" thing because US teams (in MLS anyway, not sure if true of NASL and below) are a franchise? because in my mind a franchise is singular, and perhaps that's stuck in their mind when they describe foreign teams.

Could well be RedJ, but it does get up my nose.

It is the same over here on quiz shows when every question begins with "WHAT".

What refers to an item, who or which refers to a person. For example they ask WHAT actor played so and so in such and such a film.  It should be WHICH actor or WHO played so and so.

I'm afraid I upset my wife all the time when I say they are wrong.      Other examples of Americanese are  when they say normalsy  instead of normality, or resciliency instead of rescilience, in boths cases the words they use do not exist in the English language.  Rant over.

People who say "can I get" instead of "can I have" are f**king morons.

I can't be doing with it when they say something like

"Manchester City is looking for a first win

when they mean

"Manchester City are looking for a first win

"That makes it 3 successive shut-outs on the road".
"From downtown".
"in overtime".
"Goal tending".
"at the xx yard line".
"for the tie"
"the offensive/defensive line up"
"hail-mary pass"
"two to zero"
"a zinger!"
"the quarterback"
"at the half"
"on the rebound"
etc, etc, etc  :suicide:

 :that: Couldn't agree more!!!
He comes across as such a stereotype, it's hard to believe he's a real person and not just an on-screen persona.
If I hear him cream himself over Messi just one more time....  :suicide:
Stewart Robson winds me up. There's a few players he can't stand, so he slates them at every opportunity and they can do nothing right. Even when they score there's something they should have done better.

You know it's bad when Steve McManaman doesn't seem so terrible anymore.

Still, anybody is better than Trevor Francis or David Pleat.

A swing and a miss.

How much of this is singular plural stuff and invented words is what they would consider correct and how much is just poor English?

TBH, didn't watch any of it. Trying to figure out where I can get Championship games over here. Fox Soccer Plus? Is that still going?

I thought it was supposed to go last Saturday, but it's still on.  I did discover a channel called Beinsport, which is supposed to cover Championship games, but it's in a separate sports package on Fios cable, for which there is a separate charge.

The Championship is on Bein Sport Mark, Channel 620 if you have DirecTV. I don't know what it is elsewhere.

I thought the coverage was a lot better than Fox Soccer and ESPN have offered these past few years.

Did any of you see the highlight show called 'Match of the Day' at 11 on Saturday night? They had Gary Lineker introduce the show and I actually got really excited thinking they were showing the UK MOTD, gutted that wasn't the case!!

and prize for the most rediculous set of words ever to come out of a yanks mouth...   instead of saying "i couldn't care less about  some thing"....   that they basically dont care about......        they have changed it to ..."  i COULD care less"...  about something they dont care about.....   hence they have the ability to care less to a higher degree than they currently do.   So the exact opposite of what they are trying to say!!!    as someone said further up the thread...  F*CKING MORONS!!!!!

You would not believe how many times I've tried to explain that to people. It drives me mad.

It's right up there with "axing a question", "pacifically" and "congradulations". I knew a woman who insisted it was "a mute point".
I once met a bank manager who asked my wife how she was going to communicate with her in-laws when they visited. "They're English," she replied. "yeah, but what language do they speak?"

 They can always "conversate", Orlando.

I also hate how so called professional journalists can say, " Cops are asking kids in the area for info", what flaming good is that for teaching "children" how to speak properly ?

Oh, that's just "American English".

I home-schooled my daughter until the 1st grade to make sure she had a good start. At school they consistently marked her down at reading tests because they insisted her English pronunciation was "wrong". I went to the Head and told him that whilst I appreciate we are in America, if they were going to discriminate against her for saying "zed", rather than "zee" etc, then they had better start picking on the mexican kids too. As expected, 100% test scores followed. I suppose it's easier to overlook the use of the Queen's English, than it is to teach a hispanic kid to stop putting E's before every word starting with an "S".

After a year of being taught things she'd known since she was three, we're back home-schooling again.
At least she's not being indoctrinated with the bloody pledge of allegiance every day anymore.

What you say about school Orlando, I saw a few years ago that a teacher was changing the words of the American National aAnthem because" her kids didn't understand some of the words".

She's a teacher for God's sake, what's wrong with giving them a dictionary each to look up the words they don't understand. Now that is dumbing down to the n'th degree.

We also have a part of the local news which is for six year old birthdays. Send in your photo and let us know if your kid has a unique name how to "say" it. Not pronounce, as most of the parents didn't know the word pronounce, let alone what it meant.

That's shocking, even for over here.

I've always found it amusing when people call America the "melting pot". More like a stew-pot somebody forgot to stir.
