James Coppinger- appearances
« on October 07, 2013, 06:55:37 pm by The Red Baron »
It missed my attention at the time, but when he played against Burnley last Tuesday, James Coppinger was making his 374th senior appearance for Rovers. That puts him ahead of Dennis Peacock and into 5th in the all time list of first-team appearances for Rovers. Current top ten (up to including the Leicester game) as follows:

Colin Douglas 468
Fred Emery 438
Bert Tindill 429
Brian Makepeace 378
James Coppinger 375
Dennis Peacock 373
Sid Bycroft 358
Glynn Snodin 345
Len Graham 332
Ken Hardwick 331

Given good form and fitness up to the end of the season, James should become only the 4th player to make over 400 senior appearances for Rovers.

In terms of Football League appearances, he's now in 6th place and has Sid Bycroft in 5th firmly in his sights. Again, he has the chance to move into 4th place later this season.

Fred Emery 417
Colin Douglas 404
Bert Tindill 401
Brian Makepeace 353
Sid Bycroft 336
James Coppinger 332
Dennis Peacock 329
Len Graham 312
Glynn Snodin 309
Ken Hardwick 307

I am assuming RB that Copps' statistics include Sub appearances (when he came on), whereas some of the list of greats got theirs before subs were allowed. Just a thought to put things into perspective, although in this day and age I am full of praise for Copps and his loyalty to Rovers.

It's a shame he'll probably not reach the records. Still, he'll go down as a Rovers legend all the same.

Either way, this is an epic achievement in the modern era. I'm quite surprised with Glyn, although he was very young on debut.

Will he get a testimonial next year?

Yes, they do include substitute appearances. In all senior games he's made 322 starts and 53 sub appearances. In the Football League it is 289 starts & 43 subs.

More to the point,  he's out of contract at the end of the season,  so a 1 year extension could see him topple a few more

Surely he'd want more than a year,  Rob?

Am I imagining it or did I read some time ago that he's thinking of packing up at the end of his contract? Or at least returning to the north-east?

Surely in the days of no subs it was a much smaller squad therefore less competition for places?  Also a lot less foreign players competing for positions.

I think he's already moved house and gone back to the North East

If we stay up & he's offered a years contract, surely he'll jump at it?

You're a long time retired in football Copps.
