Singing section

Interesting post on Man United's facebook wall

"Old Trafford’s new singing section got the thumbs-up from David Moyes after the 1-0 win over Real Sociedad. The first trial of the area is part of a move designed to boost noise levels and replicate the vocal away support the Reds always enjoy on home turf. And the United boss was impressed by what he heard: http://bit.ly/1gIdhIv What did you think of the singing section?"

If you've got a half hour to spare there is a great little video on You Tube expanding on this and putting it in its historical context.

When I say great it makes the case for 'safe standing' throughout. And interesting to note that their 'singing section' all stand and are stewarded by the SLOs at the club rather than the stewards.

interesting to how people said it shouldn't be needed. But the biggest club in the world have done it. If ever there was a club to take a leaf from it would surely be them? As they're marketing and PR team are the best in the world. You can moan about the team and all that bull but you can take nothing away from the rest.

It was only an area for 1500 fans, put that into one stand it would have worked very well.
I personally think ours should be in West stand near the away fans. Far too many people sit in the south stand to sit in an atmosphere but not contribute to it and therefore even in this stand it is too spread out.

Old Trafford's atmosphere will never be what it once was because most of their vocal supporters now support FC United instead, although a large number still go to away games but refuse to enter Old Trafford for obvious reasons. The recent attempt to change the atmosphere at Old Trafford is nearly 10 years too late.

A signing section is something that has to be organised by the fans IMO, clubs can't organise it because an atmosphere has to be generated naturally rather than forced upon the supporters. That doesn't mean to say the club can't put in place the correct infrastructure for it to happen but from then it falls to the supporters.

Then there is the argument of where it takes place, a good number think the West Stand, yet most of our supporters who sing are located in the South. Many in the South refuse to move simply because they have sat their since 2007 and vice versa in the West.

When we tried it at the Notts County game it didn't work and the excuse we keep hearing is because of a dire performance, I'm sorry but if we're only going to have an 'atmosphere' when were winning and playing well then doesn't the idea of the singing section fall flat on its face? We already have a decent atmosphere when were winning and playing well, a singing section should be there to help raise the noise levels when the team isn't performing as hoped.

That's my opinion anyway...

Why not have a group of South stand singers and  group of West standers compete and compliment each other . Publish and distribute a South stand song sheet and a West stand sheet . No doubt at first they would be same songs but once it gets started there is plenty of room for creativity.
Would the club authorise a second drummer in West stand ?

whilst this is something I will not advocate (too much!) - it is quite simple to move from the south stand to the nw corner at half time (or vice versa). This may only be of any appeal if rovers are shooting towards the n stand in the second half. Passage between the s and w stand is not difficult through the sw corner. There is a concourse that allows it about half way up in the corner! there is usually plenty of spare seats in the nw corner too unless its a big game.

of course this is something that many of us will remember pre km. the traditional half time shunt towards the goal your team was shooting towards.

at the burnley home game I got tickets for the west stand (near nw corner) and migrated to the ss for the second half.

ok you can only sit where there are avail seats - but on games where there is only 8k its no problem.
