Go back in time, or go into the future?

Back in time for me, because there are a lot of things I'd like to see. Some Rovers/ football/ sport related, some not.

I suppose because I'm a historian by training I'm always thinking "what was that REALLY like?" and it would be a wonderful opportunity to answer that question.

You would have to tread very carefully, though, so as not to interfere with anything that could affect the future. There are some brilliant Star Trek episodes (for example, the one where they beam aboard a US Jet Jockey) which highlight the dangers of time travel.

Going into the future seems a bit scary. You hope it will be OK but I'd be nervous that I'd find that things didn't end happily, if you know what I mean!

PS: One question- would your "time travel" be permanent or temporary?

Forward for me.

I have supported Rovers since 1961 and had lots of downs and more recently lots of ups.  It's a real roller coaster being a Rovers supporter and I actually love the fact that you never really know what to expect.  I take the rough with the smooth but despite Two recent relegations they were both from a division I could only dream of being in fir much of my life.  So I still feel on the crest of a wave.  League One and being tipped as a major player and going for promotion. WOW!

I would go back to 1984 and put a knife through my step dad's forehead, then hop foot it to present day.

I'd hate to go forward, at my age I might not be there

What would happen if you went travelled through time, but not space, and where you arrived you were stuck inside an old cavity wall, or buried in a robot scrapyard?

I think we need to be very careful with time travel.

I suppose it could depend on where you live as to your preference of travelling forward or back.  For instance, Doncaster folk would probably choose travelling back in time, as those of us who have been to Barnsley have experienced  it already.

On the other hand Barnsley folk who have visited Donny would feel more comfortable travelling forward again.

If you knew why you would come back with me and stick one in there to.

Instinctively you would want to go back in time to change the things that brought you sorrow but I wonder what would actually happen. the path to the future would be altered, who knows if it would be for the good or not.

A divorcee might think, well I would go back and never marry that  :that: but what if when you arrived back to real  time you realise your kids have never existed.

I know it's thinking too deep but when I was young after my dad died I  thought about it a lot.. If I could alter time I'd save him, grief and wishful thinking can be extremely pitiful. lol

Then I watched a Hammer Horror, it was one of the four stories in one jobs. One of the stories was about a young couple who wished to be rich. Fate gave her money in the form of her husbands insurance by killing him.. Of course she then wished him back with her.. he came back to life but had been embalmed so was in total agony. even when he was chopped into pieces the body still writhed and screamed..

Moral being be very careful what you wish for.... lol.

Going back to the distant past would be a much safer bet although I would want to be invisible and undetectable.... Not that I've overthought it you understand...

Forwards. Always. The human condition has improved beyond the wildest dreams of people 100, 1000 or 10,000 years ago. I'd be fascinated to see what advances we'll have made in 100, 1000 or 10,000 years time.

Imagine telling people from 500 years ago that billions of ordinary people would be educated, well housed, well fed, safe from violence and have access to health treatment.

Imagine telling a doctor from 100 years ago about penicillin, MRI and heart transplants.

Imagine telling an engineer from 1000 years ago about central heating, air travel and the Internet.

Imagine telling a Stone Age man about space travel, quantum physics and and nuclear fission.

You think about that and you get some use how advanced we are likely to be in 100, 1000 or 10,000 years time. It'd be gobsmacking to see just 1% of it.

EDIT. Mind, there was a particular lass when I was at University. Went on to become a model. Never knew until many years later that she fancied me. I wouldn't mind going back 20-odd years for a couple of hours with her, a feather duster and a jar of Marmite.

A jar of marmite? Each to his own, I suppose, but I always preferred whipped cream or (better still) Gentleman's Relish.
