Roundabout on White Rose Way
« on October 07, 2014, 09:04:18 am by rtid88 »
I had a car accident on the big roundabout on White Rose Way yesterday, the 1st one you come to as you come off Carr House Road. I have noticed on several occasions the slippery road surface signs but thankfully have had no problem before! However yesterday as I was approaching my exit on Heavens Walk I completely lost control of my car and was unable to regain it! Shortly after a Policevan pulled up and said that there are Diesel spillages on that roundabout regularly! So just be careful if you use that roundabout as while I was there I saw several other vehicles slip on the surface and know of one other vehicle that crashed there yesterday too! As for my car well still waiting to hear back fron the garage to see if it is repairable or not but I do feel aggrieved that an accident that was not my fault should result in me losing my no claims and having to pay my excess on my insurance!!

Two different types of tarmac on that roundabout. My vans back end slipped on it today. The lakeside roundabouts are bad as well. My beetle always used to slide round 'em

Its not a council thing though, its Highways agency.

I work for the HA and it is not one of ours. It is a local road and is the responsibility of DMBC.

I have a feeling that if it was on the strategic network then the problems would have been addressed sooner. If they've had any significant diesel spills then the road would need to be resurfaced. If there is a serious accident on there (and I mean involving loss of life or serious injury) then the council could find themselves in serious s**t.

The Highways Agency have charge of every road in the UK, and 2 mts either side of that road, doesn't matter if it is a M way, A road, B road, Cul De Sac.

I know that as I have just had a major problem with North Yorks CC and HA down my Cul de Sac.

Someone has been telling you duff gen, mate. I know because I work for the HA. They are not responsible for White Rose Way.

If you happen to live just off an A road then your road could be affected by works that are the responsibility of the HA. But they are not responsible for maintaining your road.

Sorry , I meant Highways Authority ( suppose that's NYCC in my case ) as opposed to Highways Agency.

Interestingly they have resurfaced the corners and various other sections of the roundabout last night, the council will be getting a phone call from me today, they clearly knew there was an issue and they have just been sitting back on it.

Why do you think the accident was not your fault? You are supposed to drive in a manner that suits the road conditions, you had seen the slippery surface signs so you should have adjusted your driving accordingly.

If it had been icy and you had crashed before the council had gritted, would that be their fault too?

I did adjust my driving as soon as I saw the 'Slippery Road' signs!! I am not a stupid boy racer I was going round the roundabout in 2nd gear and driving at 10 miles an hour max!! The road was coated in diesel and once my car skidded on it I could simply not recover it! I rang the council today and they were holding a meeting to discuss this roundabout and White Rose Way, if that is not a clear example that there is something wrong with that patch of road I don't know what is! So no I don't think the accident was my fault and now I am incredibly out of pocket!!

A mate of mine once lost control of his car on a slippery road and the police said that they could tell by the skid marks that he was driving too fast......He refuted the allegation, and said they didn't even check his underpants.

The trouble with road surfaces is caused by the long dry spell which has caused deposits of diesel etc to build up over a period of time, you then get a heavy down pour and the water soaks into the road surface causing the deposits of accumulated oil to rise to the surface and make the road surface slippery.
This is a major issue near locations such as bus garages as the Buses leave the garage full to the brim,in warm weather diesel expands so they always lose some fuel at the first few roundabouts they encounter. This was always a problem near to the bus depot on Leger way.
And I know it's too late for Rtid88 but a bit of advice worth considering by our younger fans who drive.

Which is precisely why the council should have done something before, the Policeman I spoke too said that they had had complaints before! You could physically smell the diesel as soon as I got out of the car! I have been told of several accidents on that roundabout that have taken place over the past few months! Don't get me wrong if I had been doing a silly speed and was not taking into account the weather conditions and the signs than I would not be complaining but the fact that I was driving sensibly I just feel incredibly aggrieved and wronged!!
