I personally don't go in for all this nationalism malarkey. Problem with all the candidates for English national anthem is that they all refer to the heaven and earth, the monarchy, slavery, or some other antiquated thing (at least in this country)

I'd choose the sex pistols version of god save the queen, or maybe The Smiths - Panic, or maybe Portishead - Roads as a cheery option.

Billy Connolly had it right, it ought to be the theme tune from The Archers ;)

Here's another one to sing to our boys as they leave for a tournament finals.

Not many people can go through the entire National Anthem anyway and far less would know the Second Phase that contains the words "Crush those rebellious Scots"

No wonder they still Boo ... will look for a link !

General Wade has the distinction of featuring in its second verse, which is now considered anti-Scottish and is no longer sung.

The words of the offending verse are:

Lord, grant that Marshal Wade
 May by thy mighty aid
 Victory bring.
May he sedition hush and like a torrent rush,
 Rebellious Scots to crush.
 God save the King.

Another verse begs Wade to ‘confound their politics, Frustrate their knavish tricks...’  This verse was rewritten to cover all enemies of Great Britain.

However this gives a different take on verse 6

Although verse 6 may seem excessive, and not a great way of keeping Scotland united, it is thought that these words were first sung when Bonnie Prince Charlie set foot on Scottish soil, and was a “prayer” to save him from the Scottish Uprising, and keep him safe so he could become the rightful King.

https://jdaviesx.wordpress.com/2012/02/07/national-anthem-god-save-the-queen-all-6-verses/

But normally only verse One is sung however when a longer version is used i.e. two verses are sung it is always verses one and three this is normally state occasions

The Loyal Toast is played by musicians at the end of a formal dinner and consists of of a shortened version of  verse one, the first three lines and as the orchestra finish's glasses are raised and the gathered raise their glass's and say "The Queen" just occasionally on a formal dinner the full anthem is used (one verse) normally when a member of the Royal family is present however if a senior Royal two verses are played (see above verse's one and three .

Now if that hasn't bored you stupid .......................................................

England fans stopped booing other nations anthems years ago.

I can't remember the last time when England had a home match where the opponent's national anthem wasn't whistled and jeered throughout by England fans. It's always made me cringe when they do it as it is completely disrespectful.

Glyn, I haven't missed many England games home or away for many years. As I've stated they haven't done anything of the sort for many years, maybe 8 or 9. To suggest otherwise is unfair and casts doubt on my version of events.

SM

Point of order. Since when has GSTQ been "our" national anthem?

Yep, you're right, it's not.

But for those, like Glyn, who believe it's sung because we believe in God then they're sadly mistaken.

I don't know whether other people sing in because they believe in God or not, I just object to being expected to somehow respect a song whereby I ask one thing I don't believe in to protect another thing I don't believe in.

To be honest, I neither know not care whether you or any other England fan believes in God. The thought didn't cross my mind.

My comment was an observation on the bizarre sense of nationalism that accompanies the England team. It is truly ridiculous that a team representing one part of the UK, in a match against another part of the UK, appropriates the national anthem of the entire UK as it's own. And then its fans complain that when the fans of the other side boo, they are being disrespectful!

Do you see the irony?

Of course I do. I don't think I suggested otherwise. But of course, although it's incorrect, the English supporters have nothing else to sing therefore they do so with gusto.

I was at both those games. I can't hear any booing of the German anthem at all, are you sure you have the right clip?

I didn't remember the booing at the Welsh game, but they obviously did. But the same scenario as last night, England were the away team to one of our close neighbours meaning our anthem was played first and roundly booed. A predictable response.

But I stand by my claim that the booing of anthems by England fans died out some time ago. It's certainly not a 'given' as Glyn has made out.

With all the games played at Wembley over the last few years there must be dozens of examples on you tube if the practice was widespread.

Yep, about 1:10 into the video. Booing, general chit-chat, a chant of "Eng-ger-land, Eng-ger-land".

I like the logic that England fans booing national anthems died out some time ago... except for at the games where it didn't. There may be other examples on YouTube, there may not. I only did a quick search.

The English anthem is the only one I've heard roundly and loudly booed by Wales fans. Not myself, but each to their own. I've heard a handful of idiots start to boo anthems at other games; there were a small group in Belgium on Sunday - but they were quickly hushed thankfully - and I think a few against Scotland the other year, but from what I remember they too were soon hushed. At least that's how I remember it, we'd seen a lot of Glasgow bars by that point.

EDIT: Ah, turns out the booing in Hampden was more widespread than I remembered it.

Speaking of Welsh fans and anthems... in the ultimate show of respect, on Sunday we even joined in with the Belgian National Anthem
