What if the British Empire Reunited Today?
« on December 26, 2016, 07:45:01 am by DevilMayCry »
The British Empire was the largest Empire to have ever existed in our history. So what would things look like if the empire reunited today?

I found this on youtube today and I think it's interesting.

Bizarre series but yes, it is pretty interesting, if meaningless.

The yanks were certainly jealous of it and couldn't wait to jump into our shoes as the world's policeman. Look where that's left us.

I bet UKIP would be all for us being in a union with other countries, just so long as we were able to tell them what to do...

If that is aimed at me Glyn I am not a UKIP supporter but maybe if the two main parties had taken them a little more seriously we may have had a different result.

I didn't take it as aimed at you Idler. But even if it was, what matter? Everyone has their own views. Everyone makes their own digs, And everyone is best advised to ignore them whether they're real or perceived.

Me? I reckon Glyn has a point.

It wasn't aimed at any one person at all, just UKIP.

Do you know what I find hilarious about political views nowadays? NOBODY talks about how good THEIR party of choice is, just how bad their opponents are!

How far back does 'nowadays' go? It's been like this for as long as I can remember!

Sign of the times BB. Sign of the times.... There's an awful lot of meaning underlying your observation.

Personally I think they're all as bad as each other! Vote for me as Local Councillor, MP, PM or king of the world and I'd do no worse than any of our current crop of political superstars! Lol!

Which brings us right back to the discussion about leadership.... And the lack of it these days in the West.

I have never known a PM as insubstantial as Theresa May. She's been PM for six months and I still couldn't say what her standpoint is about anything! John Major may have been a charisma vacuum but May seems to be a political one as well.

I've heard, from two sources and 1 newspaper now that La May is an absolute control freak. She won't let anyone make any decision without her giving it the green light in advance. This, apparently, has already led to a 10 week backlog in a lot of decisions - hence the political vacuum Glyn. Nowt can happen, or is happening, until she personally agrees it. Can't imagine Boris and co. surviving very long in an environment like that. I did wonder, right at the start, if she appointed him to both appease the outers and to let him hang himself. He's doing a grand job so far too.

The PM with the biggest reputation of being a control freak was Neville Chamberlain...

I thought that was Pitt the Younger - 'a government of one man alone'?

Blair was a bit of a control freak too apparently.

Honestly couldn't tell you anything about May's premiership other than "Brexit means Brexit" (which we still don't know what it means) and blithering on about jam or some such.

Must have been fun with two control freaks then in that Labour government :) Gordon Brown was so jealous of his own powers and position that Tony Blair was kept in ignorance of the content of Budgets for weeks and weeks. I have no knowledge at all, but that rather suggests to me that Tony Blair couldn't have been a control freak. He wouldn't have let it continue if he was.

I don't think Blair was particularly. What he did do was to by-pass Cabinet on a lot of matters.

Brown definitely was a control freak though. Both as Chancellor and PM.

Perhaps. But then on the other hand would the backlash from the Brownites have been worth putting a stop to him?

No, but it would explain why he never pulled the trigger with regards to Brown. In my opinion, anyway.

Maintaining your own power is being a control freak - that is when you start going outside of your normal purvue and interfering and doing your Ministers jobs instead of letting them do it themselves.
