Looking forward and back

Looking back, if it weren’t for those late goals conceded against Oxford and Oldham DF would be hot favourite for Manager of the Month. Maybe a blessing in disguise there.

Our next four League matches are very very tough - away at Peterborough, Scunthorpe and Shrewsbury, and home to improved Plymouth who are good away from home.  The first of those four matches will be a good test of how we might fare. We might yet be very glad about our last three wins.

Question for you. How does 2017 rank in terms of points won in a calendar year? I guess 2003 must be close to the best we’ve ever had but I’m struggling to think of other years which combined half of a promotion season and a top ten half of a season.

Well, if we look at these reverse fixtures, each of those teams 'nicked' results off us at the Keepmoat when we were a match for them, so let's do the same to them! No pressure on us.

Good question, and 2003 is an obvious candidate. Although 47-48 was a relegation season, 46-47 was so astounding it might be closer than we might think.

And 1969 is a possibly to be better - we were flying until just before Christmas.

Another possibility would be just missing out on promotion one season, and winning it the next season. Long time ago, but 48-49 and 49-50 might be good.

Also we were second in consecutive seasons just before WW2.

Have a busy day with visitors, but will check later, both 2 and 3 points per win.

This is our record in 2017

My money would be on 1969, or possibly 1934.

A quick look shows it is a close run thing. There are differing numbers for games played in a season (42 or 46) and more differing numbers in half a season. The only sensible measure is points per game, and I give below some of our best calendar years (I have not checked all years - might be good for a future Fanzine article), showing games played, points won at 2 per win, points won at 3 per win, points per game at 2 per win and points per game at 3 per win:

1934: 41 matches, 57/81 points, ppg 1.390/1.976
1935: 45 matches, 58/85 points, ppg 1.289/1.889
1938: 45 matches, 58/79 points, ppg 1.289/1.756
1947: 45 matches, 51/72 points, ppg 1.133/1.699
1949: 42 matches, 54/75 points, ppg 1.286/1.786
1969: 46 matches, 59/80 points, ppg 1.283/1.739
2003: 41 matches, 55/79 points, ppg 1.341/1.927
2017: 48 matches, 52/72 points, ppg 1.083/1.500

There might be a better year somewhere that I have not yet checked (I think 2009 might be surprisingly good for example), but probably at both 2 and 3 points per win, 1934 is best, followed by 2003 and then 1935.

Good call TRB.

Just been checking a few

2017 (Ta TRB)
P48 W20 D12 L16 PPG(All at 3pts for win)1.50

2004
P46 W20 D15 L11 PPG 1.63

2003
P41 W24 D7 L10 PPG 1.93

1984
P46 W22 D10 L14 PPG 1.65

1981
P37 W17 D11 L9 PPG 1.68

1969
P44 W21 D17 L7 PPG 1.82

1949
P42 W21 D12 L9 PPG 1.79

1947
P44 W21 D9 L14 PPG 1.64

1934
P41 W24 D9 L8 PPG 1.98

So 2017 is not quite in the top eschelon, but it’s still been a pretty good year by historical standards. There might be one or two other years which match it, but it’s probably been in our top 10 or so calendar years in our history.
