Anyone know the laws on changing working hours....

..... the company I work for are thinking about changing the working hours to try and cover 7 days ,because most of the staff won’t work weekends or overtime.I’m one of the few exceptions, starting early and going in half days at a weekend. So how much notice to they have to give the workforce if they want to inforce this, I’m one week shy of 17 years at my job .

I could be wrong but i believe they legally only have to give 7 days notice of any shift changes.

Where I used to work, when we got nights took off us, our night premium was made up for a third of our service

Some companies will give you the same notice as your notice period.

They should be giving you at least the notice period on your existing contract as they are effectively terminating this contract and giving you a new one.

You do of course have the option of trying to stick with your existing contract or negotiating (either personally or as a group) the terms of the new one eg moe money if they are wanting you to work unsocial hours etc. Although that could mean that they decide not to keep you on...

Understand their are chimney sweep jobs available on a first come , first served basis for Brexiters soon.

45 days notice is all that companies need to give, used to be 90 days. Tories changed it about 6 years ago
EDIT...for companies under 99 employees its even worse, 30 days notice.

  Hoola, for your house insurance to be valid, you have to have your chimney swept and a certificate from an authentic trained chimney sweep every year.
  My mate earns in excess of £1k a week at certain times of the year and goes on three or four cruises in the quiet periods, having retired with a good pension from his managers job with the council.
   He does up to 12 chimneys a day at £45 to £50 a chimney, it is not a bad job buddy, although you may sneer at it.

Thanks for the advice, I contacted the union,only person at my employment that’s in it. They told me that if the company want to change my hours they have to give me 12 weeks written notice

If you look further up there is plenty of informed advice . There is no advice on who to vote for however from me  ; the Tory Party had it's biggest amount of voters in the last election EVER  Many if not most will have full time jobs too . Lighten up , it was tongue in cheek. ( except they do want to de- regulate the economy - they have said so )

I accept I have been a bit oppurtunistic but that is what Dominic Raab has already signed up to ( de- regulation ) and in the light of present circumstances - people not in Unions etc , I am going to bang on about it .

I'm sorry if you are having pressure put on you . Don't take this the wrong way but you said you had worked there for 17 years - do I detect a certain amount of pressure put on you too ( otherwise why mention your time spent there )  ?

Look on the bright side you might get the first offer £1000 p.w.you say and cruises.ì
As for sneering at it , I want his mobile number .  Chimney sweeps is only a reference to Victorian times , what's got into you - I know someone making £2000   a week making matchsticks - mind he's on strike atm.

Sounds like they might not have given only 1 of them is currently in a union. I stopped working a short time ago , it was the same where I last worked no- one was in a union the company on the surface promoted them but privately discouraged employees ' organising ' in any way at all.
Good employers will see the benefits of this type of employee involvement, unfortunately weaker ones don't.  Perhaps this is partly to blame for  the nation's productivity weakness ?

Opposite ends of the spectrum Hoola, I guess those of us of a certain age remember the barmy power that the unions had. Job demarcation, hardly ever getting a full week in due to some industrial relations problem. Please don’t think I’m anti union I had my 53 weeks on strike but there has to be a status quo.
I agree a lot of employee forums are to tick the engagement box with all decisions pre made.
It’s much easier improving the culture if everyone is onboard

Yes I remember it very well from both sides of the divide too. It was mayhem at times .

Don’t get me wrong as a young lad with no commitments it was great at times especially in the summer or a Friday afternoon. I remember one time that an NUM rep threw his helmet in the air at the start of a shift, whilst saying “if that comes down we’re going home.” It was no surprise it did and everyone retired to local public houses.
I have as a senior manager worked with unions and ‘works committees’ as previously noted some have been a tick box. Some unions have been even easier to point in the right direction and some non union committees have been really pivotal and involved in improvements.

Electricity coming out the sockets 24/7 pah these young uns are spoilt Hoola aren’t they. Could you imagine power cuts now interfering with Xbox and WiFi
