The author Bill Buford coined a superb phrase 30 years ago, about that fraction of a second between the ball leaving the striker's foot and ending up where it ends up.

Dead Time.

That moment where life stops and all you can focus on is the moment itself. Where you're unsure whether the ball's going into the back of the net or the back of the stand. Where every hopeful delight and despairing agony are possible.

Brilliant photo capturing that moment at Sunderland tonight, as the ball left Maguire's boot.



Let's hope we all have that look three or four times tomorrow.
