Peter Lorimer

Legendary Leeds United forward - very poorly in a Hospice - this is incredibly sad news with an inevitable outcome - This last year or so has taken so many of the greatest Leeds team that played under Don Revie; Jack Charlton, Norman Hunter, Trevor Cherry all since departed  - these were the names of great England players I heard growing up & putting petty rivalries in its place - on a human level we must send our wishes to Peters’ family and friends

Peter Lorimer is Scottish and probably if playing today would be worth £20-30m at least . He could hit a leather football and not theses plastic footballs of today at 70mph . an amazing footballer of his day . Leeds Utd through and through .

Great player. Him , Charlie George, Bruce Rioch, Bobby Charlton, and Alick Jeffrey could blast shots into the top corner from 30 yards out with amazing regularity.

The difference with Alick and Bobby was that they could it with either foot. Amazing.

Careful you lot there will be a couple of people on here accusing you of being Leeds United supporters.

Yes Lorimer was another of that Revie team who was a great player.
The clubs all time top goal scorer with 238 goals. He even made Bobby Charlton shooting look relatively tame.

In todays money that Leeds Squad of early 1970s would be worth around 750 million to 900 million imo.

Gordon McQueen diagnosed with Dementia as well this week.

It was a helluva side for sure. You might even call it the precursor of modern football given that they were the first to deliberately and systematically exploit the rules for their own ends. The daft thing was they had no need to. They were so damn good they would have won anyway. Even though i have never, and will never, support Leeds, I think I can still name that entire side from Harvey and Sprake in goal to Sniffer Clarke up top. After 40 years that is a mark of how influential they were. They really were some team..

Gary 'Own Goal' Sprake is another one who has died by the way

BobG

PS some family the Clarke's too! Wasn't it 4 of 'em, all playing in the football league at the same time?

Harsh on Sprake Bob.
He was a fantastic goalkeeper making some unbelievable saves. Yes he made 3/4 high profile blunders in a career lasting around 12 years at Leeds.

Think most modern day Premier League goal keepers are making 3/4 high profile blunders every season.
He was treated very cruelly by the press.
I will tell you this much imo if he was English he would walk into the England team today.

Nobody who ever saw or heard about that blunder at the Kop end in Anfield will ever forget it Campsall will they?! But yes. He was a good goalie forever damned by one high profile and very public mistake

Cheers!

Sad news about Lorimer. He was great. When i was a kid I watched Rovers with my Dad of course, but my local boys team, we had a trip once a year to Elland Road. It was probably 1974/75 and onwards. Revie had gone by that point but that squad was still intact. It was a bit different to Belle Vue!

Saw him play at Hatfield Mains Ground in early 60s I suppose. Leeds the Comp 3 tims in 4 years about then

Goole & Thorne FA v Leeds FA and he was playing for Leeds of course and must have been on LU books as he got in Leeds Us Team quite early I think

Thought I had posted this before but cant find it and I think Leeds FA won by 6-0 and Lorimer got all 6 (or maybe 4)

I remembered Leeds had Orange Shirts with broad striped Blue and White Shorts and that Lorimer played Centre Forward for Leeds and I noticed how good he was as did most of those in attendance

Would like to have my memory refreshed to see how close I am to recalling the scores etc correctly but where would you find such a thing these days unless some locals were there and remember it ?
Selby ?

It's better than some of the numpties from Yorkshire that support Man U. and then always want Yorkshire C.C.C. to hammer Lancashire in the roses matches though. I can never work that one out. Even Geoff Boycott falls into that category.

I don’t support them Idler. I did in the 60’s and 70’s as was from Leeds and went to every home game bar about 5/6 matches between 1962/63 and 1977/78
But I saw my first Rovers game in Nov 1975 when I came to Doncaster aged 20 and when Bremner became manager in 1978 I became a die hard Rovers fan going home and away. I just follow Leeds’s fortunes of course ( would be a bit odd if I didn’t ) but any one who knows me knows Rovers are my team exclusively.

Your right about those Yorkshire Man U fans and my boyhood cricketing hero Sir Geoff Boycott has badly let us down hasn’t he supporting a Lancashire team.

Wasn't Gary Sprake the GK who spectacularly dived after the ball had gone past? much to the incredulity of commentators and fans alike.  I seem to remember we all did a 'Gary Sprake' the following week !!

I knew from previous posts of yours Campsall how you have followed the Rovers. I have always enjoyed respect in West Yorkshire for sticking with my team however crap we might have been along the way.
I think that a lot of it is an age thing. When I was at school we were all Rovers fans with a sort of second favourite side. Ten years later football was on tv a lot more and some wanted to follow a more successful changed allegiance to bigger clubs. I could never understand that. I'm very proud of my town despite it's faults in some areas. When people ask where I'm from I always say that I live in Bradford but was born in Donny and still follow the Rovers. I get fed up of having the likes of Man. U., Liverpool etc. down my throat every time that I open a Sunday paper or turn the TC. on. I can appreciate their players and football but they are never going to replace my team. A Bradford City fan at work used to say to some of the supposed big team fans that never saw a live match, "I've spent more on programmes than you have on match tickets".  Very true and always made me smile.

There are Football fans and there are Football fans if you know what I mean.

Proper fans and plastic ones for a better word.
So much respect to people who follow their club in the bottom 2 divisions through thick and thin. Home and away all weathers etc etc.
Rovers have many of them and they are the life blood of any club. Proper football supporters.

I saw Peter Lorimer play against us in the mid 80's at Oakwell during his second spell at Leeds in the old second division .

Leeds were struggling back then and had a number of young players in the team , John Sheridan , Dennis Irwin , Scott Sellars and both Peter and David Harvey were brought back to the club to help them out .

Lorimer played in the middle of the park that day and even in his late 30's he was superb , never gave the ball away all afternoon .

Not that it did his beloved Leeds United any good that day as a young David Hirst in our team ran them ragged in a comfortable 3-0 win .

Lorimer was superb though , the legs may have gone but the ability was still in abundance .

That reminds me of a 5 a-side tournament I played in back in the 80's. Our team was in its prime, age-wise, and we came up against a team full of 50 odd-year-olds. We were no mugs but they were proper, seasoned, bloody good footballers and as we ran around like headless chickens they played walking football, pinging the ball to each other. They had about 98% possession because we couldn't get the bloody ball off them! They scored at will and modestly beat us 3 nil!

I was fortunate to see Lorimer play in his prime at Leeds when I worked in the City in the mid/late 60's. What a team that was, and Lorimer's kicking in a dead ball situation was sublime.

We occasionally went to Elland Rd. if Rovers away was not manageable. It was the same price on their Kop as Rovers and some great football.
It was never the same as watching your own team though.

Where has this info come from? I have been trying to find it but there is nothing I can see to say he has passed away.

I just took your word for it that he had.
Nothing on any websites and nothing on Sky Sports News.

If this is a hoax I am not amused.
