A player in my early years of watching Rovers. One of Stan Andersons best signings if not the best.

Camps, according to Wiki: “…before a three year stint with Billy Bremner’s Doncaster Rovers.”
I’ll take your version!

My old mate, Derrick Downing, will be devastated. He played in the same Middlesborough team as Joe.

They pumped us 4-0 at Belle Vue in 1966, and Joe scored the 4th.

Many happy memories of Joe. From playing cards in Armthorpe club every Sunday lunch time to his head wetting night in Sheffield and ending up in the Penny Farthing until the sun came up.
RIP Joe a great mate.

Just seen that Wilts, but Wiki is incorrect.
Signed for Rovers in 76 and Anderson was manager.  Bremner became manager in Nov 78 and he sold Joe to Pompey in May 79.

When we played in white shirts with two red hoops in the middle, I recall Joe's hoops always dipped southwards, whilst his red shorts were hitched up high. Great player though, and many fond memories under the floodlights on a Tuesday night.

Smokin Joe.
Great player when I first went to BV. Didn’t realise it was only for 3 years though. Mind he did look like a Sunday league lad

Played for us whilst I was at university in London but came home regularly. Always remember him, didn't realise it was so long ago. RIP Joe.

I saw him playing at Highfield Road in the first division. Although Carlisle were relegated they had some very fine players in that team. Joe himself, Chris Balderstone, Matt Tees and one of the Clarke tribe (Frank?) at least. They were top of the first division after 3 games...

One of my favourite players at a time when I got serious about watching Rovers week in, week out. One of the few cultured players we had at the time, despite his on, off weight issues.

RIP Joe.

Sad loss. He was our "John Robertson". Put in some brilliant crosses and was a great personality. R.I P. Joe.

My dad, bless his dearly departed Barnsley supporting heart, hated Joe with a passion.

We went to Oakwell, probably around 76/77, to watch Barnsley v Rovers and all the way there he chuntered on about Joe Laidlaw being a fat, dirty bugger.  I think we drew 1-1, I think maybe Peter Kitchen scored, my memory of the game is poor - did we wear yellow shirts and brown shorts? That may have been an earlier year. Anyway, my dad chuntered about Joe Laidlaw all the way home too, alongside how Barnsley were robbed and Rovers were rubbish.

He'd chuntered on so much that for years afterwards if he said a player was dirty my response was always "dirtier than Joe Laidlaw?" and his answer was always "bloody Joe Laidlaw" as an angry statement.

RIP Joe, I hope you are able to put the record straight with my dad up there.

Fond memories. As a kid I remember him taking a penalty with such power it nearly bust the net. Let's just say he put his full weight behind it!

A cult figure wherever he played. Went on to Portsmouth and carved a niche for himself there.

There's a great pic of him somewhere where he's pulling his shorts waistband out to show how much weight he'd lost. Guessing it was a pre season photoshoot and possibly his last before going to Pompey where he had some success with them too.

Why no mention today , Laurie Sheffield was something special for sure , but Joe Laidlaw was also well loved pro for the Rovers and would get into any Rovers team past or present.
