Scout's
« on November 17, 2021, 09:12:11 pm by Tiddysdad »
As some of you know I work for Notts County on midweek match days. Last night I was incharge of the visitors (media and scout's) Notts v Rochdale.
I had 22 scout's to look after last night.
They had traveled from as far as Motherwell, Plymouth, Fleetwood etc. Yet no one from Doncaster only 45 miles away.

I asked Mr Clough if he could tell me the weaknesses of Mansfield he said how long have you got. Ha.

Danny Cowley was a real gentleman had time to discuss to problems of taking over a new team with big expectations.

Anyway my point is these scouts are coming to watch players with a view to the January window why hadn't Doncaster sent anyone .... Rotherham did.

Are they looking to spend money? I don't know. Why wasn't we there. Because we aren't looking to spend, I don't know.

Ruban Rodriguez is the player I think they where watching. But he's got a long contract so will have to part with money.

There’s no value in looking at players 22 other clubs are looking at!

Maybe we have scouts elsewhere? Or not the kind of player we are in the market for at the moment. I’m sure if we were interested we would have been there.

There are plenty of scouts who work independently and share scouting reports with numerous clubs.

We may well have had scouts who just mingled with the crowd

A friend of mine does exactly that.

I know Meadow Lane is the footballing epicentre of the world but maybe there were some Rovers scouts elsewhere, there were one or two other games going on, obviously not of the same importance.

I wonder whether everyone who contributes to a thread like this defends everything that emanates from DRFC.

I suspect that there are a good few readers who believe the Originator has a point.

Frequently people come on here and ask “What evidence do you have for a point of view?” Here is a situation where all the evidence is with the Article Writer and all those who comment seek to undermine him totally speculatively.

Ok, if you take the OP at face value he is complaining that we didn’t have a scout at a match where most scouts were watching one of the hottest prospects in non-league.

He lists the club who are top of League One as well as a SPL side as among those there. Does anyone think we are beating these sides to his signature with our budget and form?

Maybe the scouts affiliated with us were instead watching more realistic targets instead? Us and the other 50 or so football league clubs who weren’t watching in person at this one match.

All the evidence is that we didn’t have a scout at one of the eleven FA Cup replays last night, who knows what we had elsewhere.
Maybe we’re just not looking at spending our budget on a forward, as it’s widely reported we’re short of a DM and maybe a defender.

If you raise a speculative question then you're likely to get speculative responses.
It's not a question anyone on here can answer. I don't see anyone defending the club as such.

When you’ve got 20 scouts watching him the opportunity has probably gone anyway, plus he’s not actually that young, so you’ve probably got to pay quite a lot of money for him being at a decent sized club and his residual value is not going to be massive unless he sets the world alight. Also we’ve already got a player on our books who can score freely at that level but not at this, maybe we could part ex.

It is not speculative to report that DRFC did not have a recognised scout at the match. Everything that is said in defence of the club seems as though it is.

I count myself as one who has serious doubts about the current management organisation and Richie Wellens in particular. I can also understand why so many believe in him and I do not doubt his good intentions.

I think most of us has an intelligent interest, passion is perhaps the modern word, in the future of the club. Perhaps it is not surprising that most are defensive about what is going on at the moment and perhaps there have been signs of some improvement recently, but we must all share some anxiety about what the eventual outcome will be.

Pointing to possible organisational areas which may be wanting is not an unreasonable thing to write about, particularly in current times when recruitment has not been impressive. If someone in  the VSC could get some informed response from the club about the current scouting network it would be illuminating.

Hi again
I said I thought they were looking at Rodriguez but there are lots of other players they could have been looking at may be some one from Rochdale. I don't know just speculating. But I just thought may be with all these clubs represented maybe Donny could have had someone there.
As people have said they may well have and not been on my list.

I was just amazed at how diverse the list was
Cheltenham 16 div1
Walsall 15 div 2
Exeter 3 div 2
Eastleigh playing Notts soon so expected
Lincoln 15 div 1
Mansfield 18 div 2
Derby 24 championship
Fleetwood 22 div 1
Bradford 11 div 2
Luton 11 championship
Charlton 17 div 1
Rotherham 3 div 1
Hull 22 championship
Leicester 12 premier
Motherwell 5 SPL
Portsmouth 10 div 1
Middlesbrough 14 championship
Tranmere 12 div 2
Shrewsbury 21 div 1
Forest 13 championship

Not All top of their leagues with big budgets

You never know, maybe the Rovers scout went to a game that involved a fellow league one team, just a thought.

Our lack of having big transfer fees available to use on players means we have to scout differently. If we are in competition with most clubs we won’t win.
The higher we get up the league helps a bit, we are a good solid club, but we don’t take risks of players. We are ponderous in the transfer market.

Tiddy I think you’re bang on to raise the point. There’s a big lad up front for County who’s not shy in front of goal…and he’s from the Isle of Axholme. Fair question to ask in my opinion

Kyle Wootton? Came on and scored against us a couple of years ago at Glanford Park, gave it the big un, hand to the ear in front of the away end.
