It's disappointing that such a presence was deemed necessary thanks to the actions of a few idiots on Saturday but encouraging to see the club took the incident seriously and made arrangements for extra stewards. Perhaps the moron/s involved in the yobbish behaviour will have second thoughts now although I doubt that the cost that they've incurred for the club will cross their infantile minds.
Yeah we mentioned that, Accy fans must have had one each and then all the way down the stairwell in SS it looked like from the West Stand
I do think we miss a trick with stewarding. The stewards at football clubs should be right at the very centre of fan engagement. They are there to keep people safe. Some just see them as a target for ridicule and abuse though. Stewards should know their supporters. By face and name . A bit like the old fashioned Bobby on the beat. They should be approachable and in turn, supporters should treat them with respect. We could have a group of them that travel to every away game to be there to help away supporters. A reciprocal agreement between clubs that visiting stewards are allowed in to steward their own. A real bridge building opportunity. It would not take long for a small cadre of stewards to build up a proper rapport with fans if they were present home and away. Get them to travel on the supporters buses too. Most of them are rovers supporters. Instead we end up with situations like we had at Morcambe, or the quite disgraceful scene I witnessed at Stoke where one or two adults took it upon themselves to point fun at a certain steward and then kicked off when enough was had and it was time for them to be ejected. It’s beggars belief that anyone in a uniform these days gets singled out for abuse. And yes, some have clear issues around training and perspective and their own behaviour but the relationship between stewards and supporters could be so, so much better.

I always say treat someone how you'd want to be treated, no doubt the fans who abuse people who are just doing their job would complain if they were on the receiving end

Can remember when Dave Corby, God rest his soul, was a steward at Belle Vue, he seemed to know absolutely everyone, wasn’t a home game without having a laugh with Dave!
