Happiness, happiness

''Finland named world’s happiest country for fifth year running
Experts say social support, honesty and generosity key to wellbeing, as Afghanistan and Lebanon struggle in global ranking''

“The lesson of the world happiness report over the years is that social support, generosity to one another and honesty in government are crucial for wellbeing,” report co-author Jeffrey Sachs wrote. “World leaders should take heed.”

''On Helsinki’s market square on Friday, next to the still frozen Baltic Sea, Jukka Viitasaari said he was not surprised that Finns describe themselves as happy. “Many things are undeniably good here – beautiful nature, we’re well governed, lots of things are in order,” the business owner said''

quite an interesting point that NR. If you look at a map of global suicide rates the highest is Greenland and the next tier is Russia and China along with countries that share common borders with them and southern Africa.

If the suicide people hadn't killed themselves, and taken part in the survey instead, their happiness rating would be much lower.

It's easier in Greenland, in winter you just have to walk out of the door.

There'd be a lot of membership applications for the British Suicidal Tendencies society.

I watched a documentary once about suicide many years ago in extreme northern hemisphere. I’ve also spent some months in northern Norway. I believe perpetual darkness in the winter months does not help mental health.

I recall hearing recently that lots of Finns are concerned that they might be next on the list of countries that Russia fancy annexing.
That might change the feel good factor somewhat.

I can’t see Finland remaining neutral on the NATO front for too long.

What a bizarre obsession you and your clique have. The sun's been shining. It's the weekend. There are epochal events going on in the world. And you decide to waste your time trolling. Pitiful.

Hound I once worked with some Finns and I can assure you there hatred of Russia is as great as any hatred of any race or creed there is

Obviously if they were invaded they wouldn’t be able to put up as much of a defence as the Ukrainians. They are in the same position as Ukraine as none NATO members being enhanced opportunity partners I’d be very surprised if they’d roll over

They put up astonishing resistance in the 1940 Winter War. Some estimates are that they killed 150,000 Soviet troops in 3 months.

I think one positive that has come out of Ukraine is that the myth of the Russian forces has disintegrated. Yes they have devastating artillery. But their infantry and in particular their logistics are shocking.

Putin seemed to harbour dreams of using overwhelming force (or the threat of it) to rapidly crush the armed forces of neighbours and bring them to heel.

He is in the process of getting his  arse badly kicked in Ukraine and he knows now that he has no chance of winning a blitzkrieg against any decent opponent. That ought to result in a lower probability of future aggression after Ukraine.

Absolutely Phil.
There was a piece in the tv a few days ago which explained their stance against the Russians in WW2.

I suppose that you would include anyone who disagrees with you as someone who you regard as trolling you bst.
Well, I have to say that you can’t include me on your list today.
I have spent the afternoon outside in the sunshine having got back from a few days in the sunshine at Flamborough.
