Heat Pump support scheme
« on May 24, 2022, 02:11:32 pm by albie »
Is now up and running, for those thinking of upgrading their heating before next winter:

It will be interesting to see the take up for retrofits.

It will be as most people don't have 10k to spend to have it installed after the 5k discount

I have been interested in upgrading to a heat pump for a while now but have been waiting, and expecting, the government to makes a decent grant available.
I may now get three quotes and see where it leads.

An 8kw air to water system is about 12-13 k at the moment.
Compare that to around £800 for a replacement boiler.
My plumber friend says there are potential issues with condensers freezing in winter too. And when That happens they shut down.

My next door neighbour had a heat pump fitted to his existing CH system and it has run perfectly through the last two winters so I suppose not all of them freeze up.
Before I retired (I was a plumbers merchant) these heat pumps were beginning to gather pace and in all honesty I wasn’t sure they would catch on in a big way but the recent events may have changed many peoples thinking.
On the £800 new boiler price that you mention, I assume you are including fitting in that price which is more of a lower end unit.
Others for larger properties are considerably more than that.
To be honest, a £5k grant towards a £12k upgrade is quite a good incentive.
The thing that bothers me is the need to increase the sizes of radiators, width wise rather than length, as the triple panel ones are very ugly and bulky.

The. There’s the outside space needed to house the things. All well and good if you live in a detached house or semi.but what about a terrace with limited outside space, or even a flat on the sixth floor?

We are looking at s fabric first approach at work, if you don't get the insulation right , it might be carbon neutral but it won't be cheap

Yep, there will be some limitations but isn’t that the case for lots of things.
I don’t suppose there will be many sixth floor residents who have a long enough extension lead to charge an EV at home.

For those thinking about it, try speaking to your energy provider first to see what deal they might offer.
Octopus were talking a good game earlier in the year, so see if they can back it up:

With the rise in energy prices, heat pumps will be cheaper to run than a gas boiler going forwards:
