That’s just typical of her. She’ll do anything to advance her cause

She seems to forget that without money from Westminster Scotland would have struggled worse than they did during COVID
Untrustworthy she threw her mentor A Salmon under a bus which about sums her up as a person

Of all the arguments against independence it's this one that makes the least sense. 'Without the money from Westminster' - Where did Westminster get the money from? Oh right they borrowed it, just like Scotland would do if they were independent. I remember at the last referendum where a big fuss was made about what Scotland would do about the black hole in their budget. It's a simple answer, they'd borrow it or be forced to either reduce spending or increase their revenue somehow. Either way, they'd be doing it as an independent nation.

Let's talk some numbers then. Here's how far out of line Scotland's public finances are.

https://mobile.twitter.com/kevverage/status/1541823234609381376/photo/1

They spend about 9% more of their GDP on public services than they take in taxes.

To get back into line with the EU standard, they could cut public spending, sure. By, for example, cutting their entire schools budget. Or half their NHS spending.

Or they could raise taxes. They'd need to put VAT up to 40%, or increase income tax rates by half.

The one thing that they could NOT do is cover that by borrowing. Not if they retained the Pound or joined the Euro. That's what we learned from the 2011-12 EU debt crisis - countries that run huge deficits but don't own their own currencies can't attract lending on the markets without paying crippling interest rates.

Basically, Scotland is in fantasy land. They are massively subsidised by England. And independence would cripple them. The SNP are a bunch of t**ts, firing up dislike  of the English but refusing to get people to address the fact that Scotland cannot work as it is today as an independent country.

Alleged benefits of being in the EU

If they can prove that they are in a position to be a fit nation to join.  It’s not an automatic and I’d suggest borrowing to the extent they’d need to would undermine them fiscally trying to join. The EU won’t want to be allowing a nation to join who will constantly need propping up

It’s fine spending money like the Scottish government giving free education and free everything else when your economy is supported. As an independent nation they wouldn’t be able to sustain such luxuries

As long as the citizens of Scotland are appraised of all the facts about their financial position (unlike the brexit vote) and what it takes to join the EU it's their decision to make good or bad.

Phil.

Precisely.

The EU has a broadly sensible rule that, outside economic crises, Govt deficit shouldn't be greater than 3% of GDP. Scotland's is currently 9% and there's no crisis currently ongoing that remotely justifies that.

Syd. Telling them the truth is the crux of the issue. The SNP have systematically lied to the Scottish people for decades on the economic issue. That went on steroids at the 2014 referendum.

If they were honest they'd say, "Independence is an issue of principle. We want to stand on our own feet. In time, it is possible that we could be a small, highly wealthy social democratic country like Denmark. But be under no illusions - that will take decades of hard work and good governance. In the meantime, independence will make all Scots significantly poorer for many years. Choose wisely."

But they don't. Because they are zealots who want independence no matter what. Whereas the Scottish people, broadly, don't want to see their living standards collapse. So the SNP lie to them about the economic consequences of independence, and call anyone telling the truth a Project Fear monger.

A nasty part of me wishes that they had won the 2015 referendum. I'll guarantee you, there wouldn't be a single SNP politician in Holyrood if they had done. Because the Scottish economy would have been eviscerated when the reality hit. Instead, they've been able to carry on with their myth.

I don't deny any of that but the decision for a lot of ppl will be an emotional one and they should be told and understand the consequences, that their lives will change dramatically, and for most ... not for the good. You could think about fielding that question to the brexiteers, if they had known the full cost would they have made the same decision and as we can see now it is very much debateable for enough maybe to have changed the result, but would they have listened then if told the full truth?

Sales always tells you that price is secondary to a whole heap of other things. But if the shoe was on the other foot would you want to be ruled by Scotland or Wales? most resent being ruled from London.

I don't know what the answer is but denying them choice will not end it, the question will keep being raised.

Sydney most of Scotland resents being run from Edinburgh let alone London!

The snp is continuing to be divisive not just because they have an obsession with independence but to cover up their own failings.  They hide behind Westminster now what will they do if Westminster is gone?

Of course the rest of the UK could let Scotland go independent and use those funds to improve areas in the rest of the UK.  All the time Scotland has interest rates they don't set, a currency it doesn't own and public sector it cant fund.

I'm with bst make it clear that it has a cost give them the facts and let them choose.  I'm not really sure bar being Scottish solely what additional powers the Scottish government need.

Yes, I can believe all that too pud, a bit unsettled with ''Of course the rest of the UK could let Scotland go independent'' as I think it should be their own decision whether they have/make a decision. Until they all know the full truth of what a decision will bring I'm not sure anyone can say what they as a nation will make of it, and for that to happen they should decide if possible what sort of independent nation they want to be. Having watched brexit I feel they have to have some idea of where they want to go before they decide to buy a ticket.

Instead of letting all the people in Scotland vote in a referendum, they’ve already done this , let all the people of England vote if they want independence from Scotland. That way Jimmy Krankie would get her wish, but she would come crawling cap in hand within 3 years as Scotland would be skint

The problem with the people not being told the truth about Brexit is vaguely true. The main stumbling block has been the sore losers who wouldn’t accept defeat and voted against what their constituents wanted.  Putting stumbling blocks in the way of anything weakening GB and strengthen the EU against us.

Once the vote had been decided it was the role of parliament to get it done and to get it done quickly not to continue to pretend that we are in The EU

Rightly or wrongly accept the vote.  It’s just like Scotland.  Had the once in a generation vote and lost.  Now they want another one.   If they do vote for independence can Westminster hold another vote because they don’t like the result.

That’s why their called votes they decide things

Include England ditching Northern Ireland in that vote and I'd be with you!

So co-incidence struck again yesterday ...... yes there has been a lot of lightning around England in the last few days ....... and they say lightning never strikes in the same place twice. :headbang: :headbang:

as we got another "blatant" attempt to take the gloss off yesterdays events

"Tory leadership candidate Liz Truss has risked a diplomatic row with Nicola Sturgeon by calling Scotland’s first minister an “attention seeker”.

Truss, the favourite to succeed Boris Johnson as the UK’s prime minister, also said: “The best thing to do with Nicola Sturgeon is ignore her.”"

https://www.huffingtonpost.co.uk/entry/liz-truss-nicola-sturgeon-attention-seeker_uk_62e830e7e4b0d0ea9b79d195

"The poisoned dwarf" whilst on planet zog (once again) today also announced scrapping of the not proven "verdict" ( mostly unreported in the gutter press)

"Nicola Sturgeon confirms Scotland's not proven verdict to be scrapped"

"Norfolk in chance" of that getting through my dear

CLH what’s the issue with that. Surely it’s the prosecutions job to prove guilt.  If they can’t then you’re not guilty.
We all know some people get away with things but we also know that innocent people go to trial.
Not proven is saying guilty but can’t convict.  If you can’t convict then you’re not guilty

Saying all that I do dislike her with a vengeance and agree she does eveshe can to promote herself
