55% who apply will fail the psychometric testing, of the 45% left 30%will fail the interview, of the 15% left 2% will be asked back for a second interview of  which 95% will be considered not suitable, of the 5% of that lot left 1%will be offered a job so of the 3 applicants left 2 will turn the job down when the realise they start on trainees money and not the qualified rate, the 1 left will  fly through training, get made up to a qualified driver in about 6 months (they like to knock em out quick in the TOCS) and he will piss off to a decent company as soon as he can get the application in.

Next month, start recruitment campaign again.

Oh and forget about a conductors job, worst job on the railway bar none.

Technically they will be in training for 3 years as they will only become a PQS driver after the 12 month training, they will be in PQS for another 2 years covering driving assessments, unannounced download monitoring of the OTDR and completing more rules and regs exams until the pips squeak. Some will be accompanied some will not.

After that they will be a fully qualified driver where they can go out and get a job with some bigger hitters, everyone else is now into the 65/85k range.

Aslef are what you would call a proper union.
