Big changes needed
« on January 07, 2024, 05:13:36 am by Sammy Chung was King »
On the mentality of the players. Changes needed in personnel. I wouldn’t normally encourage a lot of business in January, but a big clear out is needed. We have players sitting around that are never going to be good enough-Kuleya, Degruchy to name two. We are overloaded with poor players. A squad of the size we have should have massive competition for places. That isn’t the case though. Some of our best players are injured, which keeps happening, is this being looked into, why?
If it comes to it pay offs may be needed to end contracts.

The manager has to take some blame. He signed quite a few of these duds and he can’t get any consistency out of the players signed. The decision to give Anderson an extended contract was criminal. Poor, poor decisions that have been meted out over quite a few seasons and we are drifting back to where we came from.

Other managers come into a club that is in a mess and manage to turn things around. Our supporters make too many allowances. We start off thinking we have a chance of promotion, then we take in the rubbish that it’s a rebuilding season. There were enough players around to be recruited that could have built us a side to be challenging at the top of the division. Poor recruiting has again cost us.

I don’t think it’s all doom and gloom. Some the players brought in have been a success, but they can’t show their optimum ability because of what surrounds them. There is no team work ethic. We  don’t have players grabbing hold of a game and being the difference. We are too predictable. No I don’t think we will go down this season, due to poorer teams below us, but it’s coming.

There needs to be an overhaul, of how things are done. For some reason one of the things that got us promoted in the past isn’t there-hard work. We have too many players who don’t want to do the dirty work. We look totally disorganised defensively. A midfield that isn’t mobile and powder puff. A strike force that has the ability but is fed scraps. No real quality being given to them.

We are capable of beating Newport in the next game, but it will only paper over the cracks of the problems we have. Losing mentality is eating away at the whole club like termites.
We need a balanced youth/experienced side that has some invention in it. We need strong, robust, technical footballers who can hold their own against anybody. We need new signings. Men not kids on cheap wages.

This is the side I would put out against Newport. They like to play a 5-3-2 away from home. I would play a 4-1-2-1-2, play narrow and compact. Give Molyneux a free role. Get  Faulkner and McGrath together as a partnership. Put Bailey in the holding role, giving them protection. Close and Rowe, we need more from them, they are the experience in the midfield.

They have the quality to provide the strikers with good chances. Molyneux in a free role could cause havoc. The team as a whole has to close the gaps. Become more compact and harder to beat.

                          Jones

                 Faulkner.    McGrath

        Sterry.                              Senior

                             Bailey

              Close.                   Rowe

                           Molyneux

                  Faal.                 Ironside

Where do you start in a post that's full of errors and contradictions!

McCann might agree with you with some of the points but the difference is he has the responsibility of doing it, we have the easy task of talking about it.

We have to beat the teams who we play. There is no given that we should beat teams like Harrogate, Newport etc. just because we have a big stadium and been in the championship etc. Smaller teams see us as a scalp. Yes we have issues but little things are improving. If our strikers score with every chance they have then they wouldn’t be our players for long. All the so called top players don’t score with all their chances.
There are things that are frustrating but let’s keep the faith and support. They need our support as much as we need them to play well.

The group as a whole may not have that intrinsic motivation from within.

Some players may rely on praise or criticism too much (extrinsic motivation - not sustainable). Which is maybe why a run of more than 3 games unbeaten can’t be sustained.

“You’re not fit to wear the shirt” - big response.

Emphatic 3-0 win and loads of praise - foot off the gas.

If we beat Newport we should channel the wise words of Winston Wolf (Pulp Fiction):

“Let’s not start sucking each others d*cks just yet”.

But constant negativity won’t help the players either.

Or, it’s more a continuation of what has been a problem for the last few years.

When a team lets us have the ball and defends compact, we have a lack of ideas as to how to score. Give it to Molyneux to try smash it in from 30 yards? Not going to work.
