Saw him play for Barcelona in the European Cup Semi Final v Leeds United at Elland Rd in April 1975 which Leeds won. Great player along with Cryuff in that midfield.

Just for passing interest as nothing to do with Neeskins, when the 2nd leg was played I went to watch Wednesday v Aston Villa in yes the 2nd division that night.
Villa sealed promotion if my memory serves me right & the Owls got relegated. Must have been 10.000 Villa fans at Hillsborough.

A bit pedantic I know, he was 73 not 71.

That Holland team he played in was one of the greatest footballing sides I've seen in my lifetime. On a par with the great Brazil team of 1970.

How they didn't win that World Cup final in 1974 I'll never know. They played West Germany off the park.

That final was the day after my wedding SS.
My wife didn’t object when we put our honeymoon back a day so I could watch the game.

My first holiday to Spain. 1974. Went with 6 mates and stayed at Callela

The Final featured a Telly on the bottom wall of a Room ( maybe Restaurant ) as big as a School Gym.

The crowd was split about 60  / 40 with the majority being English and Dutch Vs 40 % of West Germans

In first 2 minutes , Penalty to Netherlands awarded by Jack Taylor (Wolverhampton) to colossal cheers

Neeskens slotted in home

All the above from memory and I think Netherlands were unlucky not to win but can't remember if that's true

God...My dreams and delights have all started dying off. Now it's Johan Neeskens. It's like watching a parade of the great and the good pass before your mind for the very last time. Johan Neeskens.... Just mentioning his name conjures a whole stream of delight. He, and his colleagues, made more than just memories. I can still name almost all that wonderful, wonderful team. Johan really is one of the all time greats. Now he's back alongside the very best of them all....

Are the van der Kerkhoffs still with us? Yongbloed? Rudi Kroll? Johnny Rep and Robbie Rensenbrink? You think of one - and a whole pantheon marches through your mind....

Jongbloed
Rijsbergen
Suurbier
Jansen
Krol
van Hanegam
Rensenbrink
Neeskens
Haan
Rep
Cruyff

Pick the bones out of that lot. What a scintillating line-up.
