The game with Kettering
« on November 04, 2024, 09:11:59 am by selby »
Not one I would have picked by choice. This game could be a lot harder than people think on first sight, a team that put themselves about physically and on a pitch that is heavy at this time of the year, definitely not the greatest bit of manicured grass in the world and a stadium with sparse amenities to what the average EFL supporter is used to.
For those travelling by their own means in cars the journey is quite easy, and a fairly large car parking area but basically just the one entrance from memory out onto a main road and of course a much larger crowd than they are used to hosting so could take time to enter and leave.
A good club house but other amenities typically non league unless they provide temporary food and bar outlets.
Winnable but mostly open on three sides not the usual atmosphere we are used to and probably more personal and nearer to the action, more like pre season at such as Rosso with more numbers in attendance.
As stated my biggest fear is their physicality and we would be well served with a strong referee as when I have watched their games they have pushed the rules of the game to the maximum, we certainly will be tested, and they have as we know the odd player who have been there and done it.
Definitely winnable but we need to be prepared although I would expect us to have them watched and Grant to know all about them come the day, interestingly one of their matches coming up is against Northampton's u23s, that could be interesting after Saturdays result.

Not too far for Grant to travel if they have a home Tuesday match before we play them and he wants a to watch it himself.

Love the clubs initials - KFC

Just been looking at the list of their managers and there are some very interesting names there.

First one I noticed was Dave Cusack, and  then there was also Dick White who played for Rovers when I started watching (several years after Bentley Bullet, Wolfie and Scawsby Steve )

Then there are Tommy Lawton, Ron Atkinson, Paul Gascoigne, Derek Dougan, Gary Johnson, Mark Cooper, and John Beck. Some very familiar names there.

Tough match ahead, but I am sure Grant will have everyone in the right mindset. In our years as a league club we have been knocked out of the FA Cup by non-league clubs on 6 occasions:

1904-05 Mexborough
1927-28 Carlisle
1965-66 Wigan
2003-04 Scarborough
2004-05 Exeter
2022-23 Kings Lynn

In two if those seasons we were actually Champions of our League (1965-66 and 2003-04)

Edit: In the Conference we played Kettering 8 times: We won 2 and drew 2 at Home and did exactly the same Away. Three wins were by a single goal and one by 2-0. They will want to put that record straight and we will need to play well to go through.

Does anyone think they will move the game to Northampton town's ground seeing as their capacity is only 2,400and they won there on Saturday

Reading the free press website sound like they are trying to increase the capacity so guessing they are trying to get some temporary stands or seats, doubt they will move as they want every advantage they can get.

So for tv for me it’s still 50/50, it’s more than likely but still think others could also be expecting to be on tv

I wondered that but the Cobblers might think they’re taking the Michael after just knocking them out, guess they could make a few quid out of the cup, even though they’re out of it. Not happening though, Kettering will think they’ve got a better chance at home.

Thought the rule was, if you can’t host a FA Cup tie you are not allowed to enter the competition
