A true pioneer. James Brown invented funk by Sly was one of the guys who perfected it.
For a while Happy Mondays turned me on to funk music, Sky and the family Stone was on heavy rotation back in the late 80s in my car.
Sorry to read, he ended up living in a camper van. A severe drug problem saw to it. So often black American musicians don't really benefit from their music.
A lad like Jay Kay ends up borrowing the ideas and lives the life of fast Italian cars and all of that.
Still Sly managed to reach his 8th decade and I imagine he had some really good times too. Sleep well brother.
