Billy set to join a select group of Rovers players
« on May 20, 2025, 06:05:43 pm by Dutch Uncle »
Billy has the opportunity to join a current group of only 9 players who have scored for Rovers in league football (including the Conference) at three different levels.

First there were Ron Walker and Jim Fletcher who experienced Rovers double relegation between 1958 and 1960 from the old Division 2 to the newly created Division 4.

Walker scored 28 goals in tier 2, 9 in tier 3, and 9 in tier 4
Fletcher scored 2 goals in tier 2, 9 in tier 3, and 4 in tier 4

Then a few years later a returning Alick Jeffrey who had petrified Division 2 defences as a teenager in the 1950s, returned and was part of two title winning sides who won Division4, and thus played in Division 3 in between

Alick scored 34 goals in tier 2, 7 in tier 3, and 86 in tier 4

Then when we had two successive promotions from the Conference to tier 3 , now the newly renamed Division1, there were four players who scored in tiers 3, 4 and 5:

Paul Green: 17 + 8 + 1 (tiers 3/4/5)
Greg Blundell: 9 + 18 + 1
Marc Albrighton: 1 + 3 + 1
Steve Foster: 1 + 1 + 1

Chris Brown achieved it with an even longer gap than Alick. He scored 10 goals as a loanee in our tier 4 title winning season of 2003-4, played in two relegation seasons from the Championship (2011-12 and 2013-14) and the title winning tier 3 season in between.

In total Chris scored 11 + 8 + 10 league goals (tier 2/3/4)

Then finally James Coppinger played so many seasons that he also scored in our tier 4 promotion winning season in 2016-17, more than 10 years after arriving and still a few years before he left.

In total Copps scored 22 + 35 + 10 in tiers 2/3/4
He is the only one to score double figures in three levels which Billy will not be able to equal.

It will be great if Billy joins that select group :scarf: :scarf:

What a cracking analysis of data DU. The breadth of imagination, the data to back it up, the clarity of presentation. Cheers!

Thanks Bob. As a statto, I am still annoyed that Paul Green left when he did, he would have been the only player to have a had shot (or header ) to score at four different levels for us  :(

Great stuff, I wonder if Billy’s dad knew of this, as apparently he’s set Billy some ‘goals’ next season.
Shame Paul Green didn’t OG against us in the Championship- would that have counted?

I take it that you never saw King Alick play then?
He was scoring goals in a very physical 2nd tier aged 16 and destined for the top. Just see what the likes of Stanley Matthew’s, Jimmy Greaves, Jimmy Armfield and many others had to say about him.

Apparently, Idler, Sir Matt Busby's assistant, Jimmy Murphy, claimed that if it wasn't for tragedy, Alick and Duncan Edwards would have become the greatest of the Busby babes.

I have heard that before Steve and it would have been a brilliant partnership. It might have helped win us an earlier World Cup. Alick’s talent and vision deserved a bigger stage than how it worked out.
