Well done to them on their promotion. Really good game, put the league 2 final to shame. Both sides went for it & both played good football. Think they'll be fine next season under Mellon.

Better game than the Spurs v Man U Europa league final by a country mile and also 3000 more spectators, give me lower league football all day long.

52,000 at Wembley, a record for NL final.

Nice to have Oldham Athletic back in the Football League.

I can’t remember the name of the owner of OAFC during the Joe Royle years but when they were in the fledgling Premier League he was a prime mover in pulling up the ladder and trying to slow the trickle down flow of money to the lower leagues. He obviously felt they were there to stay. I always felt their descent to the Conference was some sort of justice.

Bolton were another club that wanted to reduce the money to the lower leagues

Bolton, or their chairman at that time wanted to more or less make the Premier League a closed shop.

They certainly did, Idler, and they tried to make illegal postponements a closed shop as well.

Whilst 3 up 3 down is absolutely justified it does seem a tad ironic that lots of the NL but former EFL clubs pushing for it have probably been against this in the past and it's only since a load of traditionally bigger clubs have clustered in the NL play offs that this has gained momentum.

Don’t forget there was a period of what, 20 years ish where NL promotion was for the champions only, and then only if their ground was good enough.  No play offs, no 2 up 2 down..

It was the Chairman, Phil Gartside, who wanted an EPL 2 so there would be ring fencing of funds.

He’s no longer with us of course, but I met him once and he was very personable and good to talk to, so I have mixed memories of him.

Are you sure it was the owner? They had an influential Chairman, who was also a VP at the FA, called Ian Stott. He was the one who wanted to merge Oldham, Bury and Rochdale. Strange idea!

I can’t remember the name but you are probably right, as the guy I’m thinking of was heavily involved with the FA and was a constant presence in the press at the time. Always had a lot to say for himself and it was often controversial.

I did't realise till this morning that their owner Frank Rothwell was the chap who set the record as oldest person to row the Atlantic solo 73 years old!

Quite an interesting take on the 3 up 3 down from Lincolns chairman I have just seen on Twitter...

All stems from academy funding and shady business in the NL

Nice to see Oldham back. A club that punched way above its weight for many years. In the premier league at one point when Joe Royle was manager. Can’t forget that cup run where Man Utd only just beat them. Andy Rhodes was in the squad at the time. Doesn’t time fly?
