Like Close and Westbrooke, he is a senior and experienced player who will be on a good salary. Is he going to be a starter in the second year of his deal? Maybe but the precedents are not good.

Maybe players don’t really want to sign for one season only - it’s not very stable for them is it?

Two years isn’t exactly “long term” IMHO..

They don’t really bit depends where the power lays I suppose.

Slightly disappointed that again we don’t seem to have managed to cast our net any wider than players who used to play for us.

If Senior is first choice (?) and we’ve just signed Husband as a back up, couldn’t we find anyone younger than might have some sell on value at some point? If he’s back up, couldn’t we have just kept Maxwell?

Can’t give players like this the 2 year retirement package. Awful deal if he may still have something to offer in year one.

Yeah, if only McCann had your top flight management credentials, cv,  playing experience and track record of achievement.

Have we upgraded or downgraded on Gibson and Maxwell? Wonder if these 2 also cost the same, less or more.

I do wonder if the amount of cards he got the last two seasons if time has caught up with him. Speed, speed of thought, general fitness and flexibility.

He has got 12 yellows and two reds in the last 61 games.... which as a defender isn't terrible and similar to what McGrath has gotten...

I actually think we need clever yellows, thats the difference between winning games sometimes, clever experienced players.

Our defensive record wasn’t great last season despite having very decent individuals (Sterry, Senior). We bring in some massive experience, someone who clearly knows the dark arts (as mpc says - clever yellows)  who, I would hope will bring all that knowledge in and make us better at the back.

Solid signing surely?

Only we could welcome back with open arms a husband who buggered off and didn't come back for 12 years.

Alan Warboys?
He was ancient and returned, signed by some small time footballer/ manager, Brem…something.
…..Fantastic signing, so it can work

Trouble is we will always remember him as the man who gave the penalty away

He's 32 not 42. Wealth of experience at this level and higher which we are missing. Can play LB and CB. I dont get what the issue is.

If we signed Harry Maguire tomorrow there would be people on here saying his stats aren't great and he is on a downward curve.

Who exactly do you want to sign? Is there any championship superstars that we can sign for free and on less wages knocking about that anyone knows of????

Pillocks  :headbang:

I also remember him for "that tackle" against Carney when we played Hull, nearly crippled the fella, now if we had some of that defending last season who knows where we would have ended up!

Hope to see more and it motivate the rest of the defence.

We needed a solid LB as back-up for Jack Senior.

We've now got one.

Any negative that can be bought out about anything... it sounds like to me.

Disappointed we cant cast our net further than ex players??
There are tonnes of players we have signed that have never played for the club??

It so happens our manager thinks he would be a good addition, not only that he has played for the club it helps.
What is the problem.

Now if we had a chance to sign Rob Street, should we not bither as he has played for the club? It would be disappointing wouldn't it. He is a good addition with the thought of being back up to one of our best players last year. I'm actually thinking now, how lucky at left back we are for a mid table league one side. I have got no idea how anyone could call out a negative with it.

We can only players who want to join us, when a player gets to 29/30 or older they are looking for the best deal and that doesn’t always mean money, things like partners job, kid’s schooling, moving house etc . We can’t force players to join it’s their job, and like everyone else players/workers go for what’s best for them

Seems solid enough cover. Senior can pick up injuries from time to time. Similar player. Good defensive player and loves a challenge.

Did Grant say we’re in for a right back? Big worry for me there when Sterry gets injured. If we’re serious we get someone to compete for that spot with him. Especially if that full back is going to be the more attacking one.

No, the 9 positions quoted as needed by GM included 2 keepers, a left back, a CB, a midfielder, 2 strikers, and 2 wingers.

He obviously has faith in Tom Nixon as RB cover, as I do. Hopefully, Dave Rennie can get to the bottom of his injury problems.

Sterry usually misses a chunk of games. If Nixon had to play half of next season's games it's a weak link.

Thought he was good in L2 when asked to cover in a back 3 but he isn't anywhere near good enough going forwards as a full back in a team that attacks wide.

Sterry is one of the easiest upgrades in the starting XI for me.

Not too sure on that, he is quality, but had injury problems last year.

If he can stay clear, great right back.

Some of the issues with his form can be stop start game timebased on injuries, not just how you play naturally.
