PS3 or XBOX
« on November 26, 2010, 01:18:00 pm by auckleyflyer »
Hi, as the title suggests.

I have no Idea fast approaching 40 and not savvy with this kind of thing since i grew up:) about 15yrs ago and sold the N64!!!

I'v two boys and a girl; 11,8 and 5. Always loved the idea of the Wii's interaction but now theres Ps's move and Xbox kinnect??
The boys both have ps2's and to me their enough! probs sound like me dad telling me an electron was good enough and we didnt need a comadore64 ??

Anyhow's back to the question, I wont be touching the thing so based on kids not adult gaming, no online playing (not having my kids being groomed by some weirdo!) and longevity, £££ dont want it out of date in a yr or two £££. Which would you recomend.

Yours hopfully, Auckleyflyer. LEE

I would subtly and cannily ask the kids which one they would prefer if possible. If all of their friends have one or the other they won't be able to swap games or play on line if theirs is different.

I speak from bitter experience, I remember the Christmas of 1983/4 when myself and my brother got an ORIC1 computer. We thought it was the mutt's nuts until we got to school in January to find that EVERYONE (and I mean every single friend) had got a ZX Spectrum. They were all happily swapping Horace Goes Skiing, Chuckie Egg and Jet Set Willie amongst themselves. We sat typing \"PING\", \"EXPLODE\" and \"ZAP\" into our trusty Oric and trying to play some shite game with vampires in ;(

Gutted wasn't the word!

Speaking from the angle of having a grown son with an xbox, I would say perhaps the ps would be better. I know from all my forays into Game and Game station there seem to be a high percentage of games for the xbox that would give your little ones the heebie geebies

Perhaps the better idea would be to go on line and see which medium has the most games suitble for the ages your kids are, then choose..

Well, the PS3 is by some distance the superior machine, and it also plays BluRay discs (high definition DVD) which the Xbox can't, so for that reason alone it's going be useful for a long time after the Xbox is obsolete.

Of course, the PS3 is dearer, but if you wanted the new controller systems then the price difference will not be as much because the Kinect is quite a quite a lot dearer than Move.

Up to you, but I'd say PS3 every time.

Add to the fact that you have to pay for online gaming on the Xbox, where as on the PS3 it's free, so the cost evens itself out over time anyway.

Can't go wrong with a PS3.

Vk don, avi files????? WTF im only just converting to dvd's and must be the only person in the world who still buys CD's.

As for microsoft getting more of my money, iv done a bit of research as i assumed the ps2 games would play on a ps3 ! im so pissed off with sony for blantant money grabbing that xbox is fave for that reason alone + their \"you are the controller\" looks a step ahead of the ps's
Truth be told i wish i could think of somert else rather than the default gameconsole but the spoilt brats have everything  (tamnia? cars last yr!) used about 5 time's and rebuilt 3 times :(

ski lessons looking better every day !

Cheers, Lee

You can play PS2 games on PS3's, but only on the models with backwards compatibility.

Sure I saw an ad the other day for the Xbox, kinnect and a game for under £260 from Argos... Mind it could have been me only half attending as usual.

Adams mate has just got the kinnect and Ad says it is fantastic.. He says there is no choice, Xbox all the way, My nephew had a PS3, guess what he traded it in for?...lol

PS3 all the way.

Havent touched the XBox since I bought the PS3, free online gaming, Blu Ray player + games console in one, plus can play previous gen Playstation games on it.

Oh! and no dreaded 'Red ring of death'.

Yes, you can't play PS2 games on anything but the first and second release PS3's (both quite old now) - mine is an original UK 60Gb one which has some PS2 bits inside it and also uses some software emulation, rather than the earlier ones which I think had a complete PS2 chipset inside them. In the early days I'd have been p*ssed off if I couldn't have played PS2 games, but these days I barely touch PS2 games. You can get not so recent PS3 games quite cheaply off Amazon or second hand in Game or on eBay now.

I forgot that you have to pay for online use on the Xbox... I suppose when it is free you forget about it! PS3 also has 'Home', which is now a nifty little novelty - in the early days (I was lucky enough to be invited to the Beta test before it was put out to the general public) it was quite bare, but there's much more to it now. It is also free amd I am sure the kids would love it.

With regards the BluRay player capability of the PS3, I am not sure in what manner your mate reckons it's 'shite' as I've never used a standalone BluRay player to compare with. That said, you put the BluRay disc in, it loads and it plays. Great picture (having a decent 1080p telly helps), great sound and no problems, so I am not sure how it could be much better really...

I've just bought a Move. Less than £42 in Tesco. Try getting Kinect that cheap! ;)

I too am of the opinion that Bill Gates has got enough money, so on principle I only use Windows (because there's really no other choice) and don't use anything else he gets more money from - Xbox included.

Anyway, your call.
