Shelton Martis

Played out of his skin on Saturday, won absolutely everything thrown at him, wins my MOTM.

If our defence looked like this:

JOC    Martis   Friend    Chimbonda

I think we would concede a lot less goals!

Ilunga wont get dropped though, although he cost us yet another goal on Saturday!

Ilunga got skinned in the build up for the second goal in the same way Chimbonda did for the first. They are both poor in 1v1 defensive situations.

To be fair ive not really rated Ilunga or Chimbonda since they cam but their second goal was a great peice of skill by JET and the cross wasn't bad either.

The defence plus goalkeeper and defensive midfield player should be a priority to sort this next two weeks. We cannot keeping conceeding goals at the rate we are if we are going to get out of the relegation zone. The defensive situation as been ongoing for at least the last 11 months so it must be put right to progress the team.

I still believe a new keeper is paramount to any success.  Sullivan does a job but I still believe we need better.

Did Ilunga or Friend play left back on Saturday?  I think sometimes you have to accept a player will get skinned, that happens.  It's how they perform as a unit that's most important.

Agreed, our first two goals came from Copps being able to get a yard to put a cross in so its bound to happen in reverse and cutting out crossed is not something modern full backs do well these days.

Seems Saunders doesn't think the same, he's given Sully another 18 month contract hasn't he?

Maybe he does think the same - maybe he's just given him that to \"do a job\". He'll make a better number 2 than young Woods at the moment, and it'll give him chance to earn his coaching badges too - maybe he's done that with a view to offering him a coaching role?

I'm pleased someone else has recognised Martis for the improvement he's made recently. Lets face it, at one time we could hardly get him though a match and he looked like a beaten man. But the new regime seems to have had a positive effect and now he's getting through 90 mins and playing with some authority.

Sure, he has weaknesses, who doesn't but he's getting more consistent and he's doing the basics very well.

By the way, what's happened to Bouhenna ??

To be fair to him, I thought he played well alongside George Friend away at Reading.

Do you have to be left footed to play left back?

I seem to remember Friend not being a centre back...until he was a centre back....or O'Connor not being a centre back....until he was a centre back (both moves successfully...some would say)....

Perhaps Chimbonda can't play left back like Diouf (A right winger for the past 10 years) can't play striker? Or Sam Hird can't play a multitude of positions....? I don't know if any of us are qualified to say if Chimbonda isn't or is any position personally? Far as I know, he could be the greatest midfielder to ever play for the club.
