Warranty?
« on February 11, 2012, 12:30:03 am by Mr1Croft »
I bought a laptop from Dell about 8 months ago, when I bought it everything worked fine, but since it still had the basic Windows 7 there were something over 2000 updates released that my PC needed to install. Only around half of them install, the rest fail on restart.

I have contacted Dell countless times, the first 4 or 5 times they told me that because there were so many updates it would take a while for them to be completed and that some would fail but I would just have to keep trying, they always said they would ring back in about a week to see if the problem is solved. They rang back once out of around 4/5 promises.

The problem still isn't solved and I have around 151 updates that just won't install, 124 of them are still dated to the day I bought my PC. All of the program updates install and the Windows security but not the Windows service packs and add ons. I contacted Dell last week and they now claim it is a software problem and that it can be solved, but the assistant claimed it would cost me. I explained I was still under warranty but he claims that only my hardware is under warranty and not my software.

Surely if I buy a system with faulty software I shouldn't be charged, I notified them 4/5 times before they came to this diagnostic and they won't do anything for me without a charge (which they claim will be a whole new Windows 7 at £84,99. I asked for the manager and I was on hold for 2 hours then I was told that we had reached the closing time for Dell's technical support and for me to call back the next day. I did so and received the same story and after losing my cool claiming that I've paid £500 for a laptop with faulty software was unreasonable (I may have worded it in a more anger related phrase) they told me they would not co-operate untill I calmed down and hung up on me.

Any suggestions of what I can do?

Take it back to the place you bought it - that's who you have a contract with - and state that it is not fit for purpose and require them to fix it within a reasonable timescale (I suggest a week max as it's obviously crucial for your work/studies etc) or they replace it immediately.

I did exactly that with a washing machine I bought from a store near Clay Lane, it`s closed down now and I can`t remember the name, anyway, we had the machine 4 weeks and it went faulty, I phoned the store up a few times and they said they would get it repaired but had to wait for a part to come from Italy, 3 weeks later and still without a working washing machine I lost my rag, un plumbed the machine and put it in the back of the car waited until 15 minutes before the store closed and then my and my old man (god rest his soul) carried the washing machine into the store, plonked it in front of the counter, demanded a replacement machine and said we were n`t leaving the store until I got one, within 10 minutes I was on my way home with a brand new replacement machine with a higher spec!

Forget Windows and run Linux instead.
