Right, can some one explain to me how a player that got sent off in last weeks community shield is able to play today?

The official line is that the Charity Shield counts as a friendly, therefore he doesn't get a ban.

Seems a bit daft to me, they`re playing for a Shield that gets added to their honours list, it`s a first team competitive fixture

Pub team is right, the Charity Shield is a pre season friendly and exempt from bans for sending off.

Can't be that. Bans from friendlies do count in the season (though bizarrely can't be used in friendlies).

How can it be a friendly, when there`s a trophy/shield at stake?

It's classed as a friendly because it is pre season, in the same way that a team going to an overseas competition is still playing a pre season friendly.

Keenan and Bremner got banned after their little scuffle back in the 70's.

Wasn't that for bringing the game into disrepute and hefty bans given.

The FA Community Shield is governed by the FA just like the PL, however when the 22 clubs resigned en masse from the FA Football League in 1992 the rules about those clubs competing in the FA Competitons (Charity Shield, league and FA cup) had to be rewritten as the Premier League was in its own right a different entity. (Although it was originally titled the FA Premier League) Ivanovic should recieve an automatic match ban in the other 2 FA competitions. However if the FA feels that way it can entire these bans to be served in the PL.
Before anyone notices the flaw in the above the other two cups are different because any suspensions recieved are to be served in English competitons (and not "FA Competitions"). For some reason this was not the case with the Charity/Community Shield.

Talking about not being seen together, when I was young I used to go to the Corn Exchange wrestling matches.  As regulars we all felt that the masked Outlaw was in fact, Canadian Gordy Nelson.

As a group we insisted that Wryton promotions get them to fight each other. Eventually, they were billed, but the following week Gordy Nelson did not show as he was " injured".  A few years ago I looked back on the internet at old time wrestlers, sure enough Nelson was listed as The Outlaw amongst other names.

It may well be that Ivanovic and McCombe are one and the same, but you will have to wait thirty years before you find out. :P :P :P
