Who was the last player to get a testimonial? Not normally around long enough nowadays.

Micky Walker had one against Wolves a few years back.

Last player I remember getting one was Paul Malcom and that was in the 80's.

I went to the Colin Douglas one. Was on the same night that Nayim lobbed Seaman (ahem) so that must have been mid 90's.

As much as I admire coops, and he is a true Rovers legend.. is the idea of a testimonial a bit outdated?  It was for blokes who left the game pennyless with no real world skills.. they normally bought a pub with the proceeds.. theswe days when they earn thousands a week, many retire very very wealthy men.. that's why some donate the match proceeds to charity.. just a thought.

Its not just about the money though - its an opportunity for fans to show their appreciation to the player and vice versa.

I think it's a nice tradition because so few players get them nowadays. It's a nice way to show appreciation for someone who's been at the club for so long.

What I find absolutely disgusting and frankly quite immoral is that footballers earning thousands of pounds a week are allowed to have a testimonial and pay NO TAX on the proceeds.

A lot of the really high rollers do give the entire proceeds to charity - in which case the tax break is perhaps less of an issue. Some don't though, I grant you.

I may be wrong, but I thought footballers had to pay tax on testimonials as they are written into a player's contract. Cricketers managed to avoid tax after it was ruled many years ago that their benefits/ testimonials were discretionary- i.e. not contractual and efffectively a gift ftom their employer (the county club).

I dare say that there are ways and means of avoiding paying very much tax on the proceeds if you are a footballer. Though as has been said, many donate the proceeds to charities.

Incidentally, I would think that Copps will want either Middlesbrough or Newcastle for his testimonial game. I don't think Darlington or Exeter will be such a drawcard somehow!

Not the team he's always supported, Nottingham Forest? ;)

And he missed a pen in the last minute!

Also, is Copps be due a testimonial in 2014 not 2013? Joined in summer 04, do you get a testimonial at the start of the tenth season or after it?
