Skiathos - what a brilliant place
« on September 05, 2013, 01:13:31 pm by Donnywolf »
Just back from a week there so missed the Bournemouth game (sounds like a good one to miss)

Lots of you will know about the exciting Runway there and I just had to post this "landing" from August 11 this year. They are extending the Runway during the winter so this particular Pilot should be able to touch down in the normal (or average) spot next year

Dear doctor, that's horrendous viewing.

Is Skiathos our side of Greece?

We ventured further than Spain and Balearics this year for the first time, and did Corfu.

The flight was about 2h 50m. If Skiathos is on our side of Greece, then I'll look at this next year.

Not sure if you dogs on here have been to Corfu, but that's also a bum twitcher for landing. You're getting lower and lower and the sea closer and closer and still no runway. Then at the last minute the runway appears right out at sea.

Went to Corfu about 3 years ago, Sidari, the airport at Corfu is horrendous and the Mozzies in Sidari are raging carnivores!

Skiathos is far side of Greece but took 3 hors 20 minutes going and 3 40 coming back

I have been 5 times now and it is really a great little island - only about 8 miles long by 3 miles wide - and it has 66 beaches and most are "winners"

Most beaches are served by the local bus which runs every 10 minutes in high season and run till nearly 1am

Oh and as you have seen the Airport is very entertaining and you can get as close to the Planes as you dare .... search Youtube and you will see the loonies whi get blown off motorbikes and into the water .... and I will add a photo if I can find it as well

The old Hong Kong Kai Tak Airport

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3PCOcyt7BPI

Watch it all the way through!

This could be a bit of a serious poo yer pants landing  the first time, you would look out of the window and see high rise blocks of flats like 100 foot away higher than what the aircraft was flying

Rob believe me take some mozzie repellant, you`ll regret it if you don`t, the bites on my legs went bad and I had to have injections and antibiotics, cost me over 100 euros. The locals reckon if you take garlic tablets from 2 weeks before you go and while your there the mozzies won`t come anywhere near you. Sidari is a nice place though and there`s plenty of bars on the strip, we stayed at a place called Legends, very nice people that run it

Went to Sidari for a week 8 years ago and it rained for 3 days - when it came to us flying home it was in the middle of a thunderstorm - they waited for a plane to land to clear off some standing water then off we went with only half a load of fuel and lightening flashing around the wings - best light show I've seen - Called in at Frankfurt for a re-fuel.

Loved Skiathos, didn't like Thassos, enjoyed Lesbos, Mykonos & Naxos, Rhodes was OK, Zante was great the first time I went, but it was a mistake to go back - the only holiday place out of Britain that I've been to more than once - I don't include Amsterdam or Paris as holiday places.

Do you mean on a voyeur basis  .... or an active one?

I actually meant that I enjoyed my holiday on the island of Lesbos :P
