For those of you wondering about the whereabouts of Mr Penney, I located him on the Southend bench at the Pirelli stadium (Burton Albion) on Saturday. He is assistant to the increasingly appropriately titled Phil Brown.
Southend managed a 0-1 victory through second half substitute Freddie Eastwood, who looked a shadow of his former best.
Another disappointment was the form of Billy Kee, sent off for two badly timed challenges just before half time. Surely not the same forward being touted on here as the next Billy Sharp!!
My main reason for posting was that seeing Mr Penney in the Southend set up took me back to a FA Cup first round victory in 1998 where Penney scored the only goal that day. A great day out and summarised for me by the celebrations of Steve Nicol. Although having won the competition 3 times he appeared as excited as every Rovers fan on that day at our first round victory, what a privilege it was to see him play for my team!

I remember that the missus had insisted we go shopping in Nottingham that day and, as was the tradition, I had joined the small group outside Radio Rentals whilst she was in M&S. I believe that, when I saw the score come in, I actually shouted out "F**k me, we've got past the first round!". Wish I'd actually gone to that match.
Didn't it end a sequence of something like 6 or 7 years where we had never passed the first round of any competition?

Thanks for reminding us of that Southend cup game Midland. Completely forgot about it. It was the first game my lad had EVER seen Rovers win and he'd been going on and off with me since 1996 as a 5 year old. Bloody tremendous day and remember being in the corner of that old stand behind the goal. Great old ground Roots Hall.
