The pitch is miles worse than the one at The Valley that fateful day. Still playing and probably shouldn't be.

the whole situation was a joke.
conditions were far worse than at Charlton
so bad that they couldn't be compared at this is a champions league match

referee didn't even bother inspecting while it rained at half time. just stayed in the warm and dry dressing room

Anyone remember that Bolton match in the UEFA Cup a few years back now? bloody horrendous conditions, Jaaskelainen nearly slid out of his box trying to collect the ball on a number of occasions and it was barely rolling at all.

Very rare a game will be called off with live TV involved

Very true. I remember a game at Ipswich a few years back which was on Sky and they went to extraordinary lengths- including sweeping the lines and repainting them- even though the pitch was bone hard and the snow was coming down.

Was anyone at Rochdale in about 1984? We played on a pitch so wet it made the Valley in August and the Estadio de Luz last night look like the Kalahari. From what I recall it was a cracking game and ended 3-3. Wasn't on the telly either, but I think no-one- teams or officials- fancied coming back on a Tuesday night.

Yeah Rochdale

Promoted only twice in their history. A guy I know (fellow old scrote) said the reason they always did badly was because they got waterlogged pitches regularly and ended up having a backlog of fixtures to deal with every year and were always knackered with lots of injuries

Then a few years back they decided to "upgrade" or improve the Pitch drainage to put and end to it once and for all .... and guess what ?

They had no pitch drainage whatsoever - and have had promo since "improving it" by putting some in !
