What's the purpose of that plastic pull out bit over the tunnels? Struck me yesterday how pointless and tacky they are

To stop us cerebrally challenged hooliganistic animals attacking our heroes as they go on and leave the pitch.
All footy fans are cattle not customers didn't you know?

...or more possibly attacking the opposition AND / or so the Officials are "safer" when entering and departing the scene off their "crimes" in case of most of them

It stops us hanging over the side of the tunnel to congratulate or berate our players or the referee. Always able to do it at Belle Vue, not sure that the players would appreciate the abuse at present

I remember an occasion at Belle Vue when the referee sprinted for all it was worth down the tunnel after an inept performance.
On another occasion, a disgruntled fan threw a punch at the ref as he exited down the tunnel - after that part of the top was boarded over and police stood at the tunnel entrance.

I remember an old guy that used to give the ref hell whether he'd had a good or bad game, he gave him that much one game that his false teeth followed the ref down the tunnel :)
