Goal difference
« on April 15, 2014, 10:17:48 pm by RobbieDRFC »
Excuse my laziness, I can't be bothered to read the rules. What's format for separating teams on goal difference should they be the same? Does it go to goals scored or head to head?

From the Football League rules (took me 30 seconds to find, if that):

"9.2 If two or more Clubs have the same number of points, goal difference and goals scored the highest placed Club shall be determined by the respective League records against each other, taking into account in order of precedence, points gained, goal difference and goals scored. If the above procedures do not separate the Clubs, then the Clubs concerned shall play off a deciding League Match or Matches under arrangements approved by the Board on a neutral ground."

The goal difference between the bottom set of clubs is very tight.

Look back at our first game, had Turnbull not gone up for the corner we would (very very likely) have now had +2 better goal difference than Blackpool.  Said at the time it could bite us on the bum later.

Now we are running out of games, the GK coming up for a last minute corner to help get an equaliser or a winner is more justified, than at that first game where there were 45 more to put things right!

I'd say very poor referee decisions have been more costly, the Pen at Watford that was clearly outside the box, the stonewaller denied us at QPR that would have put us 2-0 up, the shocking challenge on Tamas in the build up to Ipswich's winner and the ref allowing the game at Charlton to start and abandoning it at 3-1 all come immediately to mind. We've been shafted big time by the officials this season

Couldnt agree more, but we arent the only side this will of happened to. Im sure if you speak to any Blackpool, Milwall, Charlton, Barnsley, Yeovil fan. They will give you 3 or 4 occasions they got 'shafted'. Thats the game we love unfortunately.

Filo there are of course many times when the circumstances could and should have been different which would have most likely seen us safe by now.  I just think it would rankle a bit if we were to go down on goal difference and by tiny margins.

Matt Murray ex Wolves keeper was covering the game for sky and i spoke to him at Donny station after the game.He said Turnbull was stupid for doing what he did ,and said he thought it would cost us at the end of the season.

I think we can also look at some of the very late goals we've conceded.  Barnsley at home cost us 2 points, QPR away cost us another.  We've learnt nothing since Heffs failed  to stick it in the Asda Car Park against Arsenal!

;)

So Matt Murray stated with conviction, in August, after we'd played one game, that nine months later, after we'd played another 45, we'd be tied on points with Blackpool, but sent down by a goal difference that was one or two worse?

If that comes to fruition then the man is incredible.

Where we've been level and going for the win, I'm sure PD would argue that you win some you lose some. Late goal to beat Watford vs late goal to lose to QPR.

He's not calling your statement into question, more Murray's potential incredible foresight.
