Lib Dems falling out with the Tories

After 4 and a half years of a love-in, it looks like Clegg and Alexander are finding something to argue with the Tories about.

I don't suppose there's an Election in the offing by any chance?

There's been an attempt to distance themselves from the Tories over the last few months. I wonder if they will actually go as far as walking out of the Coalition? If they did, they would probably agree to back the Tories on their legislative programme (or at least those aspects of the Queen's Speech they signed up to) but they could still speak out over (for example) the Budget.

If they do so I can't see them doing it this side of Christmas. And the cynic in me wonders how happy Clegg and co would be at giving up their ministerial salaries and perks?

It should largely split now really. There's not a lot to be done In the next 6 months so would make some sense.

Lib Dem conference next week.

I'm expecting Clegg to echo the great, stirring phrase that David Steele used when it appeared that the Lib/SDP Alliance was in with a chance of winning an election : "go back to your constituencies and prepare for government."

Clegg will say: "go back to your constituencies and prepare for irrelevance."
