game at Belle Vue last night

What a crumbling mess of a stadium. Standing terraces that suffer from mining subsidence covered by a ramshackle tin roof. The rest partially flattened with so-called corporate hospitality in stacked portacabins.
A lick of paint may have helped but clearly cannot be afforded. The attendance of 3,000 was a fraction of what it was in the glory years.

And they lost and many long suffering supporters went home early, wondering why they had bothered.
But how I loved this completely unclinical atmosphere from the past. The result: Wakefield Trinity 4 Catalans 40 at BELLE VUE, DONCASTER road!!

They had a few......

One of the best sport films ever, 'this Sporting Life' was shot in part there in 1963.
And in 1979 they got to the Challenge Cup Final at Wembley, but lost against Widnes. I went to that game as I had a few Wakey mates at the time. Been pretty much downhill since then.....

Rugby League Championship winners twice (in successive seasons) and Challenge Cup winners five times.

I feel daft now because ...I went to that game too. Used to go every year to the CCF  from the age of 12 - 25. My favourite for atmosphere was the Hull final , really loved that w/end away and always back to Shepherds Bush for a drink with mates. No hassle , just a right laugh :)

I went to quite a few Challenge Cup Finals too :) Including that Hull one Hools! I was living in White City at the time so easy peasy for me. It was a cracking atmosphere - and I saw absolutely no bother anywhere at all.

...those Hull KR fans still know how to have a good laugh judging by those at Catalans last season.

One guy was dressed as a French tart, sorry to say he was more attractive than most real Hull women😜.

All the finals were like that Bob and brilliant weekends away in the city. They seem to have diluted it in much the same way we have with the FA Cup, it was simple the only way you got to play at Wembley was to win your semi-final :)
How much simpler is it discussing sport than politics eh ;)

I went to the Challenge Cup Final in 1977. Leeds v St Helens. A fantastic game and a great day out.

Oddly enough, I've never been to a FA Cup Final.

2 FA Cup Finals for me ... and both 3-2

Wednesday v Everton in 66 and that very boring (until the last 15 minutes) Arsenal v Man U

I also managed the England 1 Poland 1 World Cup Match where we of course drew and went out of the Competition and several England Scotland games in 75 77 79

England won 6-0 in the 75 game (ok for Scotlandsbest 5-1 but their goal was scored by a bloke born in Aldershot one Bruce Rioch)
