Maltese War Memorial
« on March 15, 2016, 10:48:17 am by Mike_F »
I remember a thread on here a while back where people had access to/pointed out where to find servicemen's records.

My gaffer's grandfather (Gunner Alexander Duncan) served in Malta in WWII and apparently this is commemorated somewhere. A colleague of mine is marrying a Maltese girl and visits the island quite regularly so it would be good if we could find out mmore details. Any ideas please?

I Have used the site https://www.forces-war-records.co.uk for researching

I have done a quick check on the site and there are 11 A. Duncan entries who were gunners during WW2.
It helps if you know their service number

Here below is the list of gunners ,by the way it costs 8.95 to research for a month

Cheers, I should've said he wasn't killed in action but I believe there is a memorial to all the sailors who served there. He was on HMS Snowdrop if that helps.

I believe that was myself assisting Idler with his grandfather who had served in the Boer War. I can also assist you if you are searching for WWI records - the majority of these were burnt in an air raid during WWII, with those that did survive now being available via Ancestory. We are trying to piece together various bits of information for those servicemen whose records were lost - I am currently working on the records of Queen Alexandria Military Hospital having just finished those of HM Hospital Ship ASsaye (Gallipolli and the Egyptian/Mesopotamian Campaigns).

None of which apply to you Mike. All service records from WWII still survive. They are held by the MOD and are available to relatives free of charge. To the rest of us its £30.

More details on how to apply here

I cant find anything on a Royal Navy Memorial in Malta. There is facebook group for the Navy in Malta though, drop them a line
