If you were crossing from Waterdale onto Thorne Road at Gaumont corner from the 12th to the 17th Century you would have passed by this cross.

Erected by Otte De Tilli ,Norman overlord of Doncaster, the cross was knocked down by Parliamentarian Forces moving through the town with heavy guns and Wagons enroute to Pontefract Castle.
As a consequence Hall cross was erected in Bennethorpe, set Back from the main road.

Has the definition of the word 'cross' been changed then since the 17th century?
