My take on the Curtis saga is this.
DF knows that Curtis has a year left on his contract. DF doesn't see him in his future plans and will have let him go to Oldham on what is basically a long trial. IF Curtis believes his future  is over the Pennines then everyone is happy. Curtis will get realistically a new two year contract, assuming they want him.
We reduce our wage bill and start looking for a new striker on a permanent deal from now.
Is it good that Curtis could potentially hurt us by scoring for them, well no.
Short team pain and frustration for us, but hopefully longer term stability.
When DF was asked.
" Does Curtis have a future at the club?
The response was
" Never say never".
There are lots of ifs and buts relegation, wage bills and agents to sort out. This will carry on I believe till after the final game of the season.
Happy to discuss with others that have a sensible opinion.

I'm with you on this one Lincoln.

And given the lack of games Curtis has seen under Fergie, "Never say never" to that question is as close as you're ever going to get to "Over my dead body"

Given his displays this season for us it wouldn't surprise me in the slightest if Curtis doesn't score once for Oldham, then it wouldn't look such a bad decision.

We can move him on. it's called cancellation of contract, then he is a free agent.

You do realise that you have to actually pay a player off if you release him, right?

I'm sure a settlement that works for all parties can be agreed, similar to Wellens.

I wonder what would happen should Main get injured?

Would Oldham want to send him back then?

and whats to stop him asking for every penny due to him in his contract in order to leave?  nothing!

If I were him in that situation I'd be asking for every penny I would be due if I stayed at the club or I wouldn't be leaving.  He's been treated like shite and I wouldn't blame him if he did.

You can't blame Curtis for wanting to stay at Oldham can you.
Why would you want to play at a club where the fans jeer you when you are appreciated elsewhere?

I didn't jeer him but I also found little to cheer him for in many games.
He just never seemed to progress with us. I know it's about service as well but he offered less than probably any other forward on our books in most games that he featured in.

I blame the manager,  why send a player out on loan to a team that is close to us points wise. It doesn't matter who the player is, what  position they play , if the manager wanted to loan him out why not send him to a league 2 side, I do not believe that Oldham are the only club that enquired about him, if he scores 3 or more goals in the next few weeks the only person to blame is the manager. We are over run with strikers at minute and are scoring goals for fun .

Personally looking from the outside, he has been treated fairly. He is contracted to us from before the present manager took over, he did next to nothing under Dickov, and in the time he has played for Ferguson and him seeing him in training he has decided he isn't good enough.
We want him off our wagebill, to bring him back could scupper a potential deal, and we could end up stuck with him for another year, that will stop us strengthening in the forward department.

If he scores for Oldham that hasn't relegated us, it's countless inept performances that's done that!. That's how bad it is that we think he is the answer to our prayers, he hasn't even scored a goal there yet, it's not as though he is banging hat-tricks in!.

And in  later interview after Curtis decided to remain at Oldham came the comment, along the lines of,  Well that's made my decision a bit easier in the summer
He's a goner

What makes you say that? From my perspective he was putting in poor performances so wasn't getting into the team. Then, rather than make him stay here sat on the bench or in the reserves as cover in case of injury to our strikers, we've done him a favour and let him go out and get first team football. I'm not trying to be argumentative, i just genuinely want to know if you know something i don't.

I can get the frustration that says why didn't we send him to a L2 team.
My response would be. If your were Curtis and looking to get away, would you want to play for a L1 or L2 side? Assuming he gets offered a contract then you would ' expect ' the L1 team to offer a higher salary. I do accept there are the odd exceptions.

Curtis will know that he doesn't fit into DF's plans and therefore has to do what us best for himself.he is playing well for Oldham and the fans and manager appear to rate him.
Put yourself in his shoes and what would your decision be?
Stay at Oldham and hope they want to sign him in the summer or come back to Donny and be a squad player at best, knowing the manager doesn't want him here.
Simple choice for him really.
