250000 to watch St Leger ....
« on September 10, 2016, 09:25:10 am by Donnywolf »
... in 1946

My twin Cousins were born on St Leger day 1946 (winner Airborne) making them a few days short of 70. Looking for the Race highlights I found this Pathe Newsreel and thought when I saw "250000 see St Leger" - yeah right - but omg look at these Crowds !

Packed from start to Rose Hill Rise and packed at the home turn - in fact packed everywhere. True it was after the war and the crowd were no doubt letting their hair down but nonetheless I am stunned !

Wasn't the St Leger run in midweek in those days? Wednesday afternoon IIRC.

I used to with an old fellow who told me that he went to the first St Leger after war and because of the mass of people he to walk from Ranskill to Town Moor . The few vehicles that were on the road couldn't get through because of the amount people that were making their way
