Gareth Southgate...
« on November 30, 2016, 03:22:49 pm by NickDRFC »
New England boss on a 4 year deal. I'm not sure who I would have preferred who was realistically available/attainable so I'm reasonably happy (and please to see that there is a break clause in after the next World Cup in case it doesn't work out) - what's the consensus on here? Seem to remember a lot of feeling when discussed previously that he was nothing more than an FA Yes man.

There is a break clause after Russia (see the brackets in the OP), so that means we could terminate with minimal (perhaps no) compensation in just over 18 months. Seems fair enough to me.

In that case, its the right decision. Not a great deal of competition.

Unfortunately it was a forgone conclusion as he ticks all the FA boxes of mediocrity, not rocking the boat and doing as he is told. So prepare to be bored out of your arses and expect to win nothing. Managed by someone who couldn't succeed even at Middlesbrough. Another sweet FA joke appointment in a long long line of feck ups. Two fingers up to the fans again by the privileged FA bureaucrats living in their exclusive shiny towers rather than in the world of the real football supporter.

I think it's a good appointment. Seems level headed, good communicator, good with the media and passionate about developing young english talent.

Clearly communicate better than Capello
Won't be on the front page of the sun for shagging a PA like Eriksson
Far more engaging than Hodgson
Won't create a scandal like Allardyce

And he will be able to relate to the players and earn their respect

He is as good as anyone available so let's give him a chance and get behind him

We've had what some call the best managers in the game and they have failed as have the players so he can't do any worse, Preston fans think df was a awful manager yet the majority of us like him so we might as well give him a chance

I don't get why people think having an England manager that will rub the FA the wrong way will improve the team or the football it plays...

Nobody has said that Glyn_Wigley. Its not about somebody rubbing up the fat cats the wrong way to make England play better its about employing someone with talent who is strong enough to make his own decisions and implement tactics and a style of managing that will deliver a winning team. Sadly, Southgate ticks none of the boxes for me.

Well, that's how that reads to me. If it's not what you meant then fair enough.

By improving on the comments I made above Gareth should then have a direct impact upon the football and at the same time displaying positive role modelling for young children and also help unite fans such as ourselves

You have to maintain the balance between being autonomous (i.e. Your own person) and meeting the required aims and objectives of your line managers. Anyone employed would do this. Imagine doing the job that you currently do with the whole media and social media world watching you, criticising you and intruding on your private life

I really hope Gareth is a success and develop a professional hard working entertaining side

When was the lst professional hard working entertaining England side? Terry Venables 1996 team? Or was Glenn Hoddles' team a bit later? That wasn't a bad team either.

How about Alf Ramsey's side. Obviously as I'm really young I've only seen old footage and heard the stories. With the professionalism of Bobby Moore and the talent of Bobby Charlton they must have been entertaining.
In recent years we have had some entertaining performances just no consistency. The recent 3-2 win over Germany was fantastic but never followed up

Hoddle succeeded Venables, so just after. He built a good team for France '98 - if it hadn't been for Beckham's red mist descending I think we could have equalled the semi-final reached in '96.

I thought Sven's early team, certainly up and including to the 2002 World Cup, were good to watch.

It wasn't really a red mist thing though was it?
More like an Argentinian making a meal of the situation and a ref who was pressured by the Argies into producing the red card.

Didn't do too badly afterwards though!

However you read it - we are entering another period of wastage and boredom. In 4 years time (or perhaps less if he fails miserably) we will be no further forward and bemoaning the lack of progress and arguing over who the next manager should be while the sweet FA just carries on taking the p*ss as normal.

It was a stupid thing to do regardless of the aftermath, and if he'd been more level-headed he wouldn't have done it. I'm sure that the David Beckham who was captaining his country 5 years later would have kept his cool.

I agree Nick but it really was "nothing " flick at the player.
Not worth a red card.
A better ref would have sorted it out differently.
