How much money would you settle for .....
« on July 06, 2017, 06:54:34 pm by Draytonian III »
........ to give up work ? It's been a topic at my employment today, there's a couple of clauses in this
( a ) You never work in the same job that you presently employed in
( b ) Any part time work you take ( maximum of 16 hours) up has just to be for spending/beer money
( c ) Any part time work is something you are capable of doing. Not things like astronaut etc

Me , I went for £250,000

This. Having more money than you can spend without buying shite you don't need just devalues everything in life. I'd like enough to live comfortably, that's all. Obviously I wouldn't turn down a f**k ton of cash... but if I was offered the kind of money I'd be able to live comfortably off I'd happily chuck it in and do something on the side to keep me from getting bored.

If age came into it then Id retire when I get to 55 in a few years or maybe even later....... as I said before i enjoy my job so theres no reason to want to retire yet and I dont feel ready to anyway,.

I enjoy going to work some days but I'd love to pack it in and go live comfortably abroad.
As said already, all bills paid and £800 a month left would keep me happy.

About £5M I reckon.  I'm not even 30 yet, I'd need at least that.

I can't believe that answer. You'd have to work for 40 more years on £125k a year to earn £5m gross, let alone net. Surely you'd settle for a figure significantly less?

Surely that depends on your salary, future potential salary, inflation etc?

You'd live quite comfortably for the rest of your life on a million.

Of course, but to get to your £5m figure over a 40 year career you would need to earn about £240,000 a year. I don't know what you do so perhaps that's within your future salary expectations, but even if it is you're not going to get to that level for at least 10-15 years, so you'd have to earn more like £350k-£400k a year for the following 30 years.

That's not even taking into account discounting - £5m today is worth a lot more than £5m in 40 years time.

I think if you were genuinely offered this, you would settle for a significantly lower amount than £5m.

I'm 24 and I'd say £1,000,000 as a minimum. That equates to £1,500 per month for 50 years plus £100,000 to cover a large deposit on a house.

For me 100k would have me extremely comfortable. When not here at work in Bahrain/Saudi, my home is in Mindanao Southern Philippines. There the average skilled salary is around 90 pounds a month. I am 47 now and retirement at 50 is looking a real prospect. :)
