Rovers' Youth Internationals?
« on October 05, 2017, 03:40:42 pm by RoversAlias »
In light of Danny Amos' goalscoring debut for the Northern Ireland U19s this week, I had a thought that maybe some of our resident statisticians (lovely word) might be able to help out with.

What is our history of having players thriving at youth international level like? I can't go back very far at all myself, but was wondering how long it's been since someone broke into their national set-up whilst at Rovers, prior to Amos.

I know Joe Wright has Welsh U21 honours but I didn't think he had achieved any of those appearances since joining us, whilst I remember a young full back named Evan Finnegan a few seasons ago playing for one of the Irelands at U17/19 level, but I have no idea what became of him. Going back beyond that, are there many names to earn caps below senior level?

The one and only Domenico Tedaldi (or did he just represent Wales under age groups before he joined us?)!

Daryl Pugh Wales U21s , his son Joe played at some level/ age group last season.
Ian Snodin and Glenn Humphries did so in the 80's , I can't remember which level

Ian Snodin was capped at Under-21 level by England. Glenn Humphries played for what would now be the Under-19s.

Darren Finlay, who played a handful of games for us, nevertheless won a cap for Northern Ireland B. Around the same time Steve Gallen, who never made a first team appearance for us, was capped for Republic of Ireland U-21s.

Ooh, bringing in 'B' internationals, wasn't Michael McIndoe capped for Scotland B whilst playing for us?

I might be wrong but I have a feeling David Harle did as well about the same time.

Not quite a Youth international but he had only just turned 22 at the time - Darren Finlay won a Northern Ireland B cap in February 1995 (lost three nil at home to Scotland).

Rodney Kongolo was a second half substitute for Netherlands U-20. They lost 0-1 to Germany.

Engand C appearances:

Simon Marples      2
Kevin McIntyre      4
Tim Ryan               7
Simon Shaw          2
Tristram Whitman  2

I think these were all whilst with us

I know Luke McCullough has senior squad appearances since joining us, but was he in their U21s at any stage since coming here?

I am sure we had a lad played for New Zealand but as I am old my memory for names is suffering. Some clever Dickl will know though.

McCullough made both U-21 and senior appearances while with us. Marko Marosi was in the Slovakia U-20 squad when he joined us but his only appearance was when he was still with Wigan.

What about Hugh Dowd?

Won all his caps before he joined us.

I have a list somewhere and will dig it out. Not sure it is completely exhaustive but it should help.
